📰 Covid-19 Poses More Risk to Patients With Chronic Illnesses - and That’s Bad for the U.S.
Scientists now have a better idea of how much extra risk faced by people with other conditions such as diabetes.
🖋 have a better idea of 是個道地的説法,它源於 have a good idea of。
Scientists are developing a clearer picture of the extra risk of dying from Covid-19 borne by those with underlying health conditions, an aspect of the disease that researchers say might help explain why some countries suffer worse outbreaks than others.
The bad news for the U.S.: Some of the conditions associated with the highest risk, such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes, are more prevalent in the U.S. than other comparable countries.
“If we had better health outcomes, if we had less diabetes, less hypertension, less cardiovascular disease, then we would probably not see the morbidity and mortality that we see today from Covid-19,” said Monique J. Brown, an assistant professor of public health at the University of South Carolina.
Some 15 million people world-wide have been infected with the new coronavirus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. More than 624,000 deaths globally have been attributed to Covid-19, the disease it causes, with 143,000 of those in the U.S. Case numbers are rising in large parts of the U.S. after restrictions on daily life were eased.

Since we last talked about Wuhan pneumonia, the disease, which the WHO has designated COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), has continued its spread across the globe. At present, there are nearly 100,000 confirmed cases, over 3,000 deaths, and 48,000 recovered patients. As the death toll continues to rise, many health experts fear that the outbreak will turn into a global pandemic.
Governments have responded to this public health crisis with travel restrictions, quarantines and curfews. In China, still the hardest hit, many cities in Hubei province have been put on lockdown; in Japan, passengers and crew on the cruise ship Diamond Princess were put under quarantine; and around the world, many countries have expanded travel restrictions to include travelers from South Korea, Iran and Italy, which have all been hit hard by the virus.
In the United States, the first confirmed case was a man who returned to Washington State from a trip to Wuhan on January 21. By the end of January, the first case of person-to-person transmission was reported, and by the end of February the country had its first casualty—a Seattle man in his 50s who had underlying health issues. So far in March, there have been six coronovirus deaths in the U.S., all in Washington, with four of them at a nursing home in Kirkland, a city next to Seattle. With over 100 confirmed cases in at least 15 states, and signs of community transmission, the country is preparing the possibility of a widespread epidemic.
