China’s Shaolin Temple is renowned as the birthplace of kung fu, and warrior monks have been training there for thousands of years as a way to cultivate both their spiritual and practical fighting skills. Now I do CrossFit workouts pretty regularly and I’m decently fit but recently I thought it would be interesting to see what it would be like to instead train and live like a Shaolin warrior monk.
Now fortunately there is actually a real-life 34th generation Shaolin monk who runs his own temple only a few blocks away from my apartment in NYC. According to his Wikipedia page he can break rocks with his skull, deflect blades with his skin, and sleep while hanging upside down from a tree branch. I’ve met him before and I can tell you he’s the real deal. So I decided to spend a week with him learning the ways of the Shaolin warrior monks.

The last few months haven’t been easy. Gone through a lot and felt pretty burnout from the entrepreneurial journey. But whenever things get tough and pieces may fall apart, there is one thing I do not allow to fall apart- the desire to keep working out.
So thankful to have the opportunity to compete in the mighty fit squad challenger with our Hongtai CrossFit squad. Even though we were placed 18 out of 24 teams 🤣😂, it was prob one of the best days I’ve had... in a while.
There’s just something therapeutic about working out, lifting and dropping heavy weights while screaming at the top of your lungs (and of course cheering for our teammates.) Although I’m paying for it this morning 🤣😂🤣, Im feeling alive.
It was also so awesome and inspiring to see the growing CrossFit community in Taiwan. There are some serious athletes man. You guys have fucking inspired me.
What a weekend, and I’m so glad and grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of it along with my partner in crime in 高晴
Life is a struggle. But in these struggles we find meaning and continuous improvements.
Let’s keep getting better.

Cardio for Weightlifter & Natural Bodybuilder?
My answer is WHY NOT?
I just finished 45 mins low intensity jogging under the sun.
What is cardio?
Cardio can be low-intensity cardio, can be high-intensity cardio.
Low-intensity cardio can be walking, jogging, walking uphill, walking on the treadmill...etc.
High-intensity cardio can be running, sprinting, Strongman training, skipping, kickboxing, Crossfit, Circuit Training, aerobic class, spinning...etc.
That's why I add #BJJ into my program. I treat it as my cardio.
You can see that there are many different ways to do cardio.
Low-intensity cardio is for my Active Recovery Day. As a Master Weightlifting, I just CANNOT lift heavy weight every day. Just can't. I cannot recover from the heavy lifting.
During the covid19, the gym is closed, I have to jog on the Active Recovery Day. I have to make sure the intensity is low that doesn't affect my performance on the next day.
Before the pandemic, I did #olifts two days and one day for upper-body #hypertrophy. Hypertrophy literally was on the Active Recovery Day.
I always do low-intensity on Sunday before going to church.
Adding cardio into my program, here are the reasons:
• Maintain my body fat%
• Keep the NEAT high
• Improve my recovery between sets
• Mental health
• For the heart function. The heart is a muscle.
• I don’t hate cardio anyway. I use it when I need it. According to the Neurotyping system, I'm not Type 1A or 1B, so, I can run and I can lift.
• I used to be a competitive rower, I hate I cannot run.
• I also have a goal, I want to run 10km with my son when he is 18. And he cannot beat me.
