When I first discovered the Hyakunin Isshu, I was deeply moved by its depiction of scenes and emotions that remain just as strong after a thousand years. More than simply conveying delight, anger, sorrow and pleasure, the poems communicate the depth of history, how the people of that period felt, and how they saw their lives.
I re-embroidered Hyakunin Isshu cards, and poet Tahi Saihate wrote new interpretations of its waka poems. The result was a book that we called “Sennengo no Hyakunin Isshu” - Hyakunin Isshu a thousand years on.
For the Sennengo no Hyakunin Isshu Original Pictures exhibition, I devised installations with a theme for each room, including the garden. The words that you hear flowing through the venue are Tahi’s text, read by actress Kaho Minami.
The exhibition is staged in autumn at Ryosokuin Temple. Freed from worldly thoughts, you can experience the tranquility of a place where it would not be surprising to still hear the echoes of the poems being read a thousand years ago. The colors and fragrances of the garden and the resonance of long-ago poets add to the “Sennengo no Hyakunin Isshu” world.
