Rice is sacred to Kelabit people 🌾 Here’s a (very) short clip of Aunty Remat making nuba’ laya (soft rice). The soft, mashed rice is wrapped in the “daun isip” leaf and it can keep without refrigeration for about four days. This is actually pretty hard to do because the rice is VERY hot on your hands, and the movement of folding the leaves needs to be fast and precise. The trait of a fine Kelabit girl 👌🏽 (I’m working on it 😅). “Bario Rice” is becoming quite popular, and is the generic name for all rice grown in Bario Highlands, Sarawak. There are four types of different grains grown, but the more common white rice is locally called “adan” and I believe it’s a pure grain passed down from generation to generation. I can talk so much about rice, I love rice so much 🍚 (You know my Kelabit name “Lipang” means rice husk 😅). In our kampung Long Peluan, the rice is still hand harvested and husked, so much hard work! But like I said, rice is important to us 🙏🏽 You can hear about the hard work of planting rice and making nuba’ laya on my recording of “Re Lekuah” in my album 🎶 Who else loves nuba’ ?!! 😆
