Assalamualaikum... Dedicated To All those Born in 1960's, 70's, 80's.
Without any maids, our mothers cooked, cleaned and took care of the whole family. They still had time to chat with neighbours
.
Everyone had candy floss, fizzy drinks and shaved ice with syrups. Diabetes were rare and aspirin/panadol cured all illness
.
We rode adult's bicycle to school, the richer ones had their own mini-bikes. Ironically, we all had problems with our brakes, and after running into the bushes a few times, we learned how to solve the problem
.
Prefects were a fearful lot ...more fearful than the teachers. Detention class was like going to prison for a day. We had "public canning" in schools.
NO ONE ever won the big prices on "Tikam". It was a scam but it did not stop us coming back for more
.
Motorbikes were rode without helmets. It was rare to ride a private taxi. Taking a bus was luxury - we either cycled or walked everywhere.
We drank water from the tap and NOT from bottles.
We spend hours in fields under the sun, playing football or flying kites, without worrying about UV ray. It did not affect us.
We roamed free catching spiders and did not worry of Aedes mosquitoes. We kept our spiders in match boxes and ready for a fight anytime.
With mere 5 pebbles, girls played endless games and with a tennis ball, boys ran like crazy for hours
.
When it rained, we swam the drains & canals to catch "ikan keli", none of us were dissolved in rain.
We shared one bottle of soft drink with friends, NO ONE actually worried about catching anything.
We ate salty, sweet & oily foods, bread had real butter and sometimes condense milk. We enjoyed very sweet coffee, tea, and "ice kacang" but we were not obese because.......
WE WERE OUT PLAYING ALL THE TIME!!
We left home in the morning and played all day till hunger drove us back home. When needed, our parents knew how to find us. NO ONE actually watched over us and WE ALWAYS WERE SAFE.
WE DID NOT HAVE HANDPHONES BUGGING US.
We did not have Playstations, X-boxes, Nintendo's, multiple channels on cable TV, DVD movies, no internet.
WE HAD FRIENDS.

AVOID! Here's a list of the 8 Worst Foods for Your Skin and How They're Aging You!
(1) FRIED FOODS
Fried foods aren’t just an issue for fat intake, but they can cause oil buildup in the body. Fried foods are also believed to possibly trap bacteria in the body and on the skin, causing us to break out more.
(2) WHITE BREADS, PASTA, CAKE, ETC.
When we eat a lot of this kind of food, our body experiences an increase of glucose and insulin levels which results in higher incidences of acne.
Switch to whole grain options, instead, because they’re high in antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory.
(3) SUGAR
It is the most aging food that we consume. Sugar damages collagen and elastin - the two things that keep our skin plump and young. Too much of it will make our skin lackluster, and speed up our body’s production of wrinkles.
Unfortunately, studies have also shown that sugar feeds cancer as well. So in general, we all ought to cut back. When it comes to your skin, too much of it in your body weakens your ability to fight bacteria. Long story short, more bacteria = more toxins = worse skin.
Choose natural sugars (like those found in fruit), instead of that candy bar!
(4) ALCOHOL
Alcohol severely dehydrates us. It affects the skin as the body metabolizes what little water it gets before it has the chance to reach our skin. Alcohol can also cause vasodilatation, which aggravates rosacea, and make our skin look dull.
(5) CAFFEINE
Similar to alcohol, caffeine also severely dehydrates us. Not only does that dry out the skin, but caffeine increases our production of cortisol. More cortisol than necessary accelerates the aging process, hence thinning your skin.
(6) PROCESSED SNACK FOODS
In general, processed foods are bad for our health as well as the skin. The further grains get from their original state, the less they retain their natural goodness. Processed foods are often loaded with sodium and sugar, also, which we know we don’t need more of!
(7) ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS & COLORS
Artificial colors and sweeteners are essentially science experiments that we’re putting into our body! They have no nutritional value, and can irritate our body, especially if we’re sensitive or have allergies.
These artificial products often create inflammation and histamine reactions, and what’s worse, our body tends to store these chemicals in our tissues. It wasn’t made in nature, so our body has no chance of recognizing it.
(8) SALT
Salt, especially iodized (processed with iodine) is terrible for our skin. It causes the tissues to swell, making us look puffy and even a little unhealthy. It can aggravate acne, so it's important to reduce salt intake. Most of the salt we consume doesn't come from a shaker, so check the labels before buying packaged foods and snacks.

Welcome to another MosoGourmet whole foods series! This "whole sweet potato" is actually the fateful theme that led me to cut my finger badly on a slicer a year ago. (I had to get 4 surgical staples.) This time we tried to do it without the slicer. Even without the slicer, we ended up creating something that's a little more delicious than it is whole...
*Recipe*
1. Wash one sweet potato thoroughly (about 500g). We're going to eat it skin and all, so make sure it's completely clean.
2. Wrap it in paper towel, then get it wet.
3. Wrap it with plastic wrap.
4. Heat it in the microwave for 10 minutes at 150w, then turn it over and microwave it for another 10 minutes. (Cooking it for longer at a lower temperature brings out the sweetness!)
5. Slice the skin into 1cm pieces and the rest into 5mm pieces.
6. Fry it in 180°C oil until it just starts to darken. Thoroughly pat the potato dry to remove the oil.
7. Put 16g sugar, 3g soy sauce, 15g water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. (Reduce the mixture slightly. If you prefer, you can boil it for longer)
8. Add it to the sweet potato.
9. All done! Delicious! (not enough caramelize...)
