1992 Honda NSX Type R
Constant evolution is a requirement for an attractive sports car. The NSX, of course, follows this principle, and used modifications to raise its level of perfection every year. The NSX Type R, sold in November 1992, is therefore an important model in its evolutionary history.
The NSX was already a highly perfected car with superb performance, but, in the Type R, it was further polished to perfection. The true worth of the 'Type R' became known to many through the Integra and Civic in later years, but the beginning of this idea was in this NSX Type R.
The methodology of the Type R applied to the NSX by Honda is lighter weight and higher rigidity. In reducing its weight, the air conditioning, audio system, and even the insulation was removed, only leaving features required for driving performance. As a result of also changing the seats, steering, and wheels to lighter models, the vehicle weight was reduced from the standard 1350 kg down to 1230 kg. The power-to-weight ratio was improved from the standard 4.82 kg per 0 BHP to 4.39 kg.
To match this improved power, the NSX Type R was given a body with higher rigidity in order to ensure its performance. Aluminum pipes were added to various locations of the monocoque as reinforcements, and on this solid structure, shock absorbers, springs and bushing materials were tuned to extremes.
The engine specs had not changed, but the reduction of weight is equal to a power increase, so of course it was fast. Also in the Type R, every engine was balanced to perfection one by one, and the engine feel at high rpm is simply irresistible. Just under 500 units of the NSX Type R were built for 3 years up until 1996, to be welcomed by the hands of eager owners.
