Pleased to officially open the Tropical Montane Orchidetum at the Botanic Gardens’ National Orchid Garden this morning. This project started in 2017, and the results are most impressive!
Three display houses – the Yuen Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection, the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House, and the Sembcorp Cool House – have been expanded. They and their surrounding outdoor areas make up the Orchidetum.
Here researchers can study these plants in depth, aiding conservation and research efforts. Visitors can see 1,200 species of orchids and hybrids – many rare and endangered – up close. The experience is like ascending a tropical montane forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world.
Orchids are an important part of Singapore’s heritage. I spent a very enjoyable morning admiring and learning about so many varieties of orchids.
