The film is based on the 2016 New York Times Magazine article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare," which describes Robert Bilott's case against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont after they contaminated a town with unregulated chemicals.

As happened in real life, the movie depicts Ruffalo’s Bilott as a lawyer who defends large chemical companies before he is approached for help in 1998 by Wilbur Tennant, a West Virginia farmer whose land was contaminated by chemical giant DuPont. Inflamed by that injustice, and the complicity of local authorities, the lawyer risks his career as he embarks on a decades-long legal siege of one of America’s most powerful corporations.

In Dark Waters, Haynes emphasizes the seemingly endless fight taken up by Bilott, as DuPont brings its considerable resources to bear to defend itself over the course of two decades. According to one analyst, the film’s potential to raise awareness about these issues could have a serious effect on some chemical companies’ bottom lines. But for the real Rob Bilott, the work of taking the industry to court is far from over. In October 2018, the lawyer filed a new lawsuit against several companies, including 3M, Arkema, and Chemours, a manufacturer spun off from DuPont in 2015. That ongoing case is seeking class action status, and was initially brought on behalf of Kevin Hardwick, a firefighting veteran of 40 years who used fire-suppression foams and firefighting equipment containing a class of chemicals known as PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFOA is one type of PFAS chemical).

PFAS chemicals are used in products ranging from waterproof jackets to shaving cream, and they can leach into water supplies in areas where they are disposed of or used in fire suppression (in particular on military bases, where they have been used for years). According to Bilott’s complaint, studies currently suggest that PFAS is present in the blood of around 99% of Americans. The class of chemicals has broadly been linked to immune system disruption, while PFOA specifically has been found to be associated with cancers and other diseases. Bilott’s newest lawsuit, as with his prior cases, alleges that these companies knew for decades that PFAS chemicals, specifically PFOA, could be linked to serious health problems, and that they still assured the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other U.S. government regulators that PFAS exposures were harmless.

A few months ago, I took the initiative to explore a “secret” passion of mine w/ http://instagram.com/socookiecutters & what came out of that experience is a very personal record called “Crave”. THANK U @socookiecutters for helping to make my vision a reality. I literally
sent them pages upon pages of notes + ideas💡📝 & together we made something incredibly magical. ✨💚🔥

When you listen to “Crave”, I want you to notice the subtle nuances that have been layered into the song for the intelligent listener. “Crave” is part fun catchy pop record; part social commentary. It was important to me that this song was “shiny” on the outside for the masses, but w/ a real undercurrent of darker themes & metaphors. The song is an allegory for the dangerously sweet & intoxicating world of social media- an addictive world that is CRAVED by so many👁I wanted to touch on themes of self doubt (& overcoming the doubts of others!), social masks, hyper materialism, insecurities, the need for constant validation & all of the ‘interesting’ personality types that the algorithm (literally) produces. How far will 1 go for likes?❤️It’s a rabbit hole of a song w/ universal themes that people from all walks of life can relate to🌘🌑In terms of the sound, I wanted the song to pay tribute to the pop sounds of 2000’s mixed in w/ some 80’s influences; @socookiecutters put in that fire!🔥sonically, I wanted “heaven” -conceptually I wanted “hell” 😈😇hence the cryptic instastories that you might have seen leading up to the http://instagram.com/hanvii mystery

This song chronicles the journey of a boy who battles personal demons & overcomes mountains in order to ascend through the world of social media, but all isn’t what it seems. (Or is it?) The song is meant to be enjoyed like a movie & the ending has a bit of a “twist” that I think will really f*ck w/ ur mind.😈(it will probably require some explanation on my behalf in a later video as it isn't immediately apparent) so proud of this song! One of Dan Lok’s passions in life is martial arts. Like many young kids, after watching a Bruce Lee movie, it changed his life forever. At 17 years old, Dan started training in martial arts seriously because he was being bullied in school. It wasn’t long for Dan to learn the techniques he needed, and gain the confidence necessary to defend himself.

Dan has studied with legendary martial artist such as Bruce Lee’s original student Ted Wong (http://tedwongjkd.net) and Joe Lewis “The Worlds Greatest Fighter” (http://joelewisassociation.com), making him a second generation student of Bruce Lee - in Bruce Lee's authentic art of Jeet Kune Do (JKD). He's also a third generation student of Ip Man (Wing Chun Kung Fu).

For Dan, martial arts training permeates every area of life. It’s not a hobby, it’s a way of life, and it influences how he does business.

Martial arts gave him the confidence, focus, and patience to push through these obstacles and to keep fighting when he felt like giving up.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Dan is NOT a full-time martial artist and he doesn't even claim to be that good of a fighter.

He's simply a successful businessman who enjoys the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee, just like you.
