Dear people of Hong Kong!
.
As someone, who witnessed amazing movement, which started by Ukrainian Youth in November 2013 and then became revolution of Dignity; and someone who created (directed and produced) Oscar Nominated Documentary “WINTER ON FIRE”, I would love to voice my solidarity with you. I would love to encourage you to stay strong and stay united! One of the main things I learned from Maidan, was amazing unity between young and old, between rich and poor, between people of different social classes and nationalities.
.
During the 93 days of the Maidan movement, which was also called “Revolution of Dignity,” what was important that, people hold the power to create change. It’s not always in the hands of the government. The idea that freedom and belief in economic stability and democracy can unite people of all nationalities, races, social classes and religions is so important. The fact that different faiths and nationalities can exist together and live peacefully in this region, and with respect for each other, highlights the importance of this movement.
.
I’d like for all of you to see, that hope truly lies in the hands of the today’s younger generations, who believe in the possibilities for change and freedom, even when the price for that freedom are their lives. These are young people who want to live in a future where they have a chance at enjoying freedom, and who are ready to stand up for their rights and beliefs under the worst conditions, even bullets. I would also like for you to know, that in order to be a true patriot, you need to be a patriot in your heart and soul; you do not necessarily have to be born where the battles are being waged if they’re being waged where you live.
.
Not only did these 93 days completely change Ukraine and the lives of those heroes and patriots participating in the movement, but they also changed the world and world history after that. From the early stages of Maidan, when the United States, Canada and the European Union tried to find a peaceful, diplomatic resolution, to the current situation around the entire war conflict there, this was a movement about true change. Understanding that everything must change - that we all must be open to change - is one of the most important things to learn in life.
.
I think the importance of young people’s political awakening, driven by the belief that a much better future is possible in a democratic society with freedom of expression, has never been more resonant. There are new civil rights movements happening all over the world today. People from many different generations, social classes, nationalities and faiths are all self-organizing towards one common goal, and that is both universal and encouraging.
.
Remember it’s now or never!
With you in spirit!

That's right, next week I am heading over to the land of igloos and maple leaves. I'm coming back to Japan at the beginning of November, and when I do, I'll be sure to bring back lots of Canadian OMIYAGE (souvenirs) for my friends here in Japan. Speaking of which, when you think of Japan, what kind of SOUVENIRS do you think of? Are the things I'm choosing to bring to Canada surprising to you?
