Stay safe fellow divers. 🖤
On the morning of 29th of August, 6 divers with 1 DM and 1 boatman were on the way to the dive site in Tenggol Island. Our boat got capsized as it scooped the waves into the hull of the boat, causing it to tip to one side and turned turtle. Fortunately, all 8 of us managed to get out of the boat before it sank to the sandy bottom just 100 meters away from the resort. Of course, nobody wishes this incident to happen and I applaud the quick reaction of the divemaster in getting everyone out of the boat quickly.
However, as we were mentally traumatised from the incident, it is the way how we were treated post-incident that disgusts me most. This is what I have gathered from my fellow divers that were on the same boat as me.
1. One of the divers recorded the incident right after the boat capsized and upon her arrival onto the island after we were picked up by another boat nearby, her GoPro was taken from her by one of Tenggol Coral Beach Resort staff and the footage captured after the incident was deleted without her permission.
2. We returned to the dive site to salvage the cameras and equipment that sank with the boat and one of the divers briefly recorded the wreckage of the boat. Upon completion of the dive, she felt threatened as she mentioned that Tenggol Coral Beach Resort staffs told her to delete any footage she took of the wreck.
3. After more than 24hours (Friday evening) after the incident, I had to invite one of the managing partners of the resort as the victims would like to speak to him (Marcus). Keep in mind that he was on the Island during which the incident occurred, and he mentioned that he was going to address this issue with us on our last day at Tenggol Island which was on a Saturday (31st August). Our boat leaves the island at 830am Saturday.
4. One of his replies which includes a very snobbish and lack of sincerity apology from him, also I quote “Can you guys please put yourself into my shoe as I have just lost a boat”. Comparing our lives with his boat that had sunk.
5. Also, we were told to expect a call from the KL team of Tenggol Coral Beach Resort upon reaching the mainland but up till today I am still waiting for the call.
As an avid diver myself, I hope this post could serve as a reminder to all dive centres as to not just sweep these issues under the rug but to address it to create a safer diving environment in Malaysia.
Updates:
Received a call from them shortly posting this. They mentioned that they are currently investigating and almost a month later I have not heard anything from them yet.
