As a kid, early on in my tennis development, I had the luxury of working with a coach who taught me with an old school approach , emphasizing that “being soft” was not the way to progress. He made me play with an old wooden racquet and discouraged the initial use of the current day racquet, explaining that “If you are able to play with a heavier racquet with a frame that small, then you can play with any racquet.”
I second this notion. I encourage players of all levels to learn to master hitting cleanly with an old school racquet which is much more difficult to play with. And if you choose to spend some time practicing your precision on a tennis wall on top of that (of which most players do not), you’re growth in this game will speed up dramatically.
Proper repetition breeds progress. There’s no way around the grind.
