¡Hola! We had breakfast with new Spanish friends this morning. Although they stayed for a short time, we still talked about Taiwanese culture. I also learned Spanish. They said that my pronunciation is very standard, it seems that I can live in Spain in the future! But before I set off, I would like to invite everyone to come to Chiayi, Taiwan. Let's explore my hometown, Xikou together!

=================================
1) Strike up a conversation(会話を始める)
=================================
Strike up a conversationは「会話を始める」という意味の表現で、start a conversationと意味は同じですが、より口語的な響きがあります。「〜について会話を始める」はstrike up a conversation about ____、「〜と会話を始める」はstrike up a conversation with ____と表現します。
<例文>
I have a hard time striking up a conversation with someone I don’t know.
(知らない人と会話を始めるのは苦手です。 )
What are some good ways to strike up a conversation with a stranger?
(知らない人と会話を始める良い方法は何ですか?)
I struck up an interesting conversation with some guy I met at the event last night.
(昨晩のイベントで会った男性と面白い会話をしました。)
=================================
2) Blah blah blah(などなど)
=================================
Blah blah blahは、会話中に重要ではない部分を省く時に使われるスラングで、「などなど」や「〜とか」に相当します。人の発言をそのまま復唱する場合などによく使われます。
<例文>
He was complaining about his coworkers, his job and blah blah blah.
(彼は同僚や仕事などの愚痴をこぼしていました。)
She was bragging about her extravagant vacation, the luxurious hotels she stayed at and blah blah blah.
(彼女は贅沢な旅行をしたとか、高級ホテルに泊まったとか、いろいろと自慢してたよ。)
At the meeting we just talked about the monthly sales, expenses and blah blah blah.
(ミーティングでは、月の売り上げや経費などについて話しました。)
=================================
3) Noticeable(目立つ)
=================================
Noticeは「気がつく」、ableは「〜することができる」を意味することから、noticeableは「顕著な」や「目立つ」を意味します。例えば、白いシャツについた赤ワインの染みが目立ったり、発音矯正をして発音が著しく上達したりする、などがその例です。
<例文>
Is this stain on my shirt pretty noticeable?
(このシャツの染み、結構目立つ?)
There has been a noticeable improvement in your pronunciation.
(あなたの発音は明らかに上達しています。)
Don’t worry about it. It’s not that noticeable.
(心配しなくていいよ。そんなに目立たないから。)
=================================
4) Would rather not(〜したくない)
=================================
Would rather notは「〜したくない」という意味の表現で、don’t want toと同じ意味合いですが、より丁寧で間接的な言い回しです。I don’t want toと言うとストレートすぎる響きがありますが、I’d rather notと言うと「できれば〜したくない」となり、多少和らいだ言い方になります。
✔答えづらい質問をされた時は、「I’d rather not answer that.」と言うといいでしょう。
<例文>
I’d rather not talk about that.
(それについてはできれば話したくないです。)
I’ll go with you if you really want me to but I’d rather not.
(どうしてもと言うなら一緒に行くけど、できれば行きたくないな。)
I’d rather not go out tonight. Let’s hang out next weekend.
(今夜はあまり外出したくないな。来週末、遊ぼう。)
=================================
5) Confrontation(対立)
=================================
Confrontationは「対立」を意味する単語です。何かしらのトラブルで人と対立したり、問題や困難に直面し、それらに向き合う場合に使われます。
<例文>
I’m not very good with confrontation.
(私は対立するのが苦手です。)
I try to avoid confrontation as much as possible.
(私はできる限り対立を避けます。)
I think you should confront him and ask him about it.
(彼と向き合って、直接聞いてみた方がいいと思うよ。)

Today I’m talking with Luke Ranieri (@ScorpioMartianus) who literally speaks fluent Latin and conversational Ancient Greek. He’s part of a small community of speakers around the world who have kept the Latin language alive, even though as a native language of Ancient Rome it died out over a thousand years ago. For him, learning Latin is about the community but most importantly about accessing the huge body of literature, ancient and modern, written in Latin. It was really cool to hear him talk about the way that his ability to speak Latin has allowed him to empathize with ancient Roman literature at a much higher level.
We talked about what Latin sounded like and how he and people like him have accurately reconstructed the pronunciation — he’s not just making this stuff up! We also talked about learning Latin and the way Latin is taught in high schools in the U.S. and the U.K., and as you can imagine Luke certainly has a lot of thoughts about that! I studied Latin and Ancient Greek in high school and it was interesting to compare experiences with Luke.
Make sure to check out Luke’s YouTube channels at @ScorpioMartianus and @polýMATHY

Today I talked about some words pronounced in interesting ways in Singapore. I also compared them with how they are pronounced differently in Japan, the United States and UK.
Disclaimer: Not ALL people in Singapore pronounce it the way I did in the video.

So apparently a lot of pronunciations in Singapore are influenced by British English, but some I find are uniquely Singaporean. Watch till the end to learn how to pronounce "McDonald’s" the best way in this world.
00:31 | Lettuce
01:47 | Dollar
02:46 | McDonald's
03:55 | Wednesday
04:26 | Flour
05:29 | Clarke Quay
06:16 | Car Park
06:58 | Pork
07:24 | Frog
07:31 | Card
07:36 | Thank You
I will cover the general Singlish topic in a different video. Thinking of how to make it interesting. Please wait ah.
