I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.
•a middle-class life 中產階級生活
•set things up 打點一切
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Unfortunately, half a year after we arrived, he left us. That was a huge shock. Our transition had already been quite difficult, as we both didn't speak English. Also, as Shanghai was such a big bustling city, Sydney felt a bit like the countryside, especially on the weekends, as no shops were open back then!
•shock 令人震驚的事件(或經歷);驚愕,震驚 (come as a great shock 讓人倍感震驚)
•a bustling city 繁華都會
★★★★★★★★★★★★
We were very much reliant on my dad, not only financially, but also as a conduit into the wider community. So to have that broken was quite distressing. I remember Mum crying a lot. As we had become socially isolated, we didn’t find out anything about Centrelink, so we survived on her savings for a while, and then got some help from her family back in China.
•be reliant on…
•a conduit into 進入...
•distressing (adj.)
•survive on her savings
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Eventually, Mum moved us down to Melbourne, where we were able to make some new networks and family friendships. But I was bullied a bit at school about things like my food and clothing! Whenever someone bullied me, I would defend myself, but because I didn’t have the language skills to explain to the teacher why, I got in trouble quite a bit. I ended up having to move school 3 times before I came to Balwyn Primary School, which was relatively multicultural.
•be able to 能夠
•make new networks 建立新的人脈,關係網
•be bullied 被霸凌
•get in trouble 惹上麻煩
★★★★★★★★★★★★
After that, I did alright. Music featured very prominently in my life. I had started learning the violin from the age of 2.5 years old and even with all the troubles that were going on in my life, had somehow still kept up with it. As a result, I got a music scholarship to Trinity Grammar School. But even there I used to get into quite a lot of mischief, and would often skip school to go to the movies.
•feature (v.)
★★★★★★★★★★★★
By the end of year 11, I was told I would have to either repeat the year, or consider going to another school, which was quite humiliating for my mum. I decided to move school and surprisingly, I ended up doing quite well in year 12! As a result, I ended up getting into a double degree in Law and Music at Monash.
•repeat the year 留級 ; 重唸一年
★★★★★★★★★★★★
When I started, my first thought was that I didn’t belong because I had done so badly in school up to year 11 and everyone else seemed so smart. But I put my head down, got through it, and ended up getting a job in the legal department of a major manufacturing company, which was a different approach to what most law students do.
•do not belong 不屬於這
•put my head down 埋頭苦幹
•the legal department of ...
•a different approach 不同途徑
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I really enjoyed it. It was hard work, but I learned a lot of foundational business, legal and corporate communication skills. After that I worked in corporate governance in RMIT, then started to moonlight as a lecturer in the Law Faculty. Eventually, they asked me if I wanted to do a PhD and I blindly said yes! I next worked at Swinburne University, and then was head-hunted to lead the corporate legal team at the Commercial Passenger Vehicles Commission.
•corporate governance
•moonlight (v.)
•headhunt (v.)
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I had a good life, but after a while, I realised I wanted a different kind of job. I could see my seniors were making a lot of money but that their family life was not that good. And looking at my own upbringing, I wanted to be the kind of father who could be present in my own kids’ lives. So I decided on dentistry. It would not only allow me to use the hand skills that I had developed from playing the violin, but also the analytical and reasoning skills that I'd developed in law. Plus it would be flexible, and offer me a stable income and the chance to meet different people every day!
•analytical and reasoning skills
•offer a stable income
★★★★★★★★★★★★
My now fiancée, who was my girlfriend at the time, was also applying for further study, and coincidentally we both got into university in South Australia, so we moved to Adelaide together a few years ago.
•fiancée 未婚妻
•at the time 當時
•apply for 申請
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I was lucky to get a university job at Flinders University. Initially, I started out as a casual lecturer in the law school, but I’ve since transitioned into teaching health law and research, and I’m currently writing a few books on the intersection between law and medicine. And also, obviously, trying to finish my dentistry degree!
•start out as…
•transition into…
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Mum eventually retrained as a Chinese high school teacher, and she’s still teaching to this day. Like most first generation migrants, she struggled quite a lot, and invested heavily in my success. After we’re married, my fiancée and I are planning to have children, and I’m sure they will have it much easier than I did.
•to this day 至今
•have it much easier
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Still, a lot of the failures that I’ve had in my life have really informed a lot of my successes. Looking back, I wouldn't really want to change that to have a smoother life.
https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/inform
•have a smoother life 有一個更順遂的人生

Over the years, I've learned that perseverance is very important. I hope that through telling my story, I can be an example to others who might be in a similar position as I was: to show that there's not just one road to the destination, but many roads. You just need to take the little step that’s right in front of you, and then the next one, and a few years down the track, they will seem like massive achievements.
•over the years 多年來
•be an example 成為榜樣
•be in a similar position
•down the road/line/track

I love you,My Lord....🌷

(Matthew 5:9) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

I Waked up by a dream in the morning...
This dream is very interesting. It represents the desire ,my situation in my heart....It hasn't been a somewhat complicated and clear dream like this for a while.
I just know that today is January 11 day~1/11...❤️
There are two days in my life, with deep marks...11/1 and 1/11~. I have never felt that the numbers are special, but these two numbers make me always remember, commemorate and even be grateful! ❤️🌹
It was a difficult process that was unforgettable and hard to understand. ..The day 1/11 many years ago ...made me step through a door. It was a little bit like the process of having a child. The pain was so painful that you almost didn’t want to give birth to ... But to endure the most painful stage is the beginning of a new life... , it’s true! If I didn’t step forward bravely, I would not see the greenery and fullness now. ...My Life...Landscape! All the details are beautiful and wonderful...!
I once had an experience, very cute and real! Changed my attitude in the face of injury~!
I once had an experience, very cute and real! Changed my attitude in the face of injury~!
The person who hurt you in particular is the one you love.
Once I prayed to the Lord, with tears and anger... During the prayer, I saw an image, just like a movie. The person who hurt me threw a stone at me, but the stone did not hit me, so I picked it up. I picked up the stone and threw it back angrily. When I threw it over, I felt very weak and light in my hand... At first glance, what I threw over was actually a piece of bread! Suddenly I laughed...how could I be so weak! Can't even hurt people! At this time, God said to me, if someone treat you in hatred in darkness way ,would it be the same for you to treat him? What is in your heart? If you had me, you would know what to respond...
Really, I instantly went from being angry to laughing at myself, I am so easily irritated, because my heart is filled with...it really is not this, I can give too much beautiful things and kindness...
In the dark, you can only find a way out by becoming the light yourself...don't wait for others...
You can become light yourself, and you yourself are the beauty! That power! That wisdom! That brave! ...But you didn't find the key...even you don't want to find it~
Recently, I have a deep realization that no matter how much you love someone or how many people love you, no matter how many people being with you, you will eventually have to face yourself alone~ the soul of you~ If you can’t appreciate and love yourself well, and understand that you are beautiful, you can’t be comfortable and satisfied~.
For those who hurt and broken, and those who don’t understand why they hurt you~ let it go!
There is no need to say a hurtful sentence, because you should take more energy to see yourself loving yourself and becoming...the beautiful you~! Make people happy when they see you! As satisfied as if they had bread! ❤️🌹
Today on January 11, 2021~~This is the day that once made me cry, I give my thanks to my Lord~
Thank you for always staying true to me. In my most difficult time, hug me with your most tender and powerful chest! Feed me with your tenderest and wisest words, lead me with your softest and brightest light, and wrap me with your deepest and broadest love... So that I can be free in the ocean of the soul...I love you, My Lord...🌷

Me 21 Years Ago

Can you find me in the movie?
It was my first day on the set and I chose to wear the prettiest work dress in my wardrobe. I made special effort to style my spiky hair very well. The director’s assistant lined up a few extras. The director walked up and down scrutinising the few of us. He picked me and I was hastily pulled into the make-up room by the staff. The make-up artistes did my make-up and excitedly told me. Wah, you will get to speak a one line of script. How rare! You’re so lucky to be picked!
I had done advertorials. That was my first time taking part in a movie production but I had no special feeling about it. I was still a University student wanting to make some pocket money. Three or four takes later, it was all over, very much like a dream.
Every one of us have such unexpected lucky moments in life. We can use such moments to encourage ourselves but don’t get all obsessed about your luck that you slack in your efforts
Looking back at those times 20 years ago, I guess it laid the path that will lead to me having my own TV channel and making many videos. But this time round, it will not be just a one liner. 😁
The door of opportunity will always open for the well-prepared one.

"How Far I'll Go"
(performed by Auli'i Cravalho)
I've been staring at the edge of the water
Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know where I cannot go
Where I long to be
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know
If I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
I know everybody on this island seems so happy, on this island
Everything is by design
I know everybody on this island has a role, on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I'll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?
See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know
What's beyond that line, will I cross that line?
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know
How far I'll go

Antonio Banderas
Diane
