英文教學者是否應該糾正學生每一個寫作錯誤?
不應該!
在台灣,幾乎每一位第二語言英文老師都會糾正學生的寫作錯誤。有些老師這麼做是為了符合學生的期待,然而其他老師則是認為修改每一個錯誤有其它的必要性。可是,關於這方面的實證研究的結果尚無定論。有些學者提出文法的錯誤糾正在第二語言 (L2) 學習的情境中並沒有明顯的效果,原因是當老師把每一個錯誤糾正出來的時候效率有限,當其中的部分錯誤甚至是超越學生能理解的範圍。如此一來除了加重學生的壓力外,並且會使學生失去動力(尤其是針對初學者)。若在學生人數較多的時候,錯誤的糾正更則會加重老師的負擔,卻收不到預期的效果。
應該!
然而,有另一派學者持正面看法,認為修改錯誤對於第二語學習是一大利器。大部分中級及進階程度學習者期待老師能修改他們寫作上的錯誤。而且他們不但珍惜,也願意立即更正那些出現在文章中的錯誤。另外,一些進階學習者也可以利用錯誤糾正,即時充分理解和主動更正固化錯誤 (fossilized errors)。除此之外,英語在台灣長期以來一直是當作外語學習 (English as a Foreign Language*),大多數學生很難有機會去自然的接觸,吸收,及使用英文,所以更需要老師的輔助和錯誤修改。

那老師和學生應該怎麼做呢?
部分近期的 L2 Error Correction 研究指出,錯誤的更正的確對學生寫作有益。但學者卻認為老師應具備下列的考量,才能使錯誤糾正更為有效:
1. 到底什麼才算錯誤?
◆錯誤不是偶然或是不小心發生的,那是失誤 (random mistakes)。
◆第一語言 (L1) 於第二語言 (L2) 之干擾的錯誤。
◆錯誤是有系統性 (systematic, rule-governed errors -> interlanguage)。
2. 修改寫作錯誤時,教師必須:
◆有選擇性的挑選錯誤。適合學習者的程度和學習目標一步一步的學習,不應該專注在學生完全無法理解的錯誤上。
◆糾正文章中語言上(lexical, grammatical) 和內容中 (unity, progression) 的錯誤。
◆適當的實運用直接和非直接的批改 (direct and indirect corrective feedback) 。

◆必須要提供即及時的反饋。
◆教導和鼓勵學生使用語料庫 (corpus and concordance) 來探討及更正第二外語寫作上的錯誤。
◆保持鼓勵而不是批評的態度。
3.學習者則必須:
◆一旦收到寫作的錯誤糾正,應該立刻理解及修正自己的錯誤,如不理解應該詢問老師以便得到進一步的說明。
◆在老師的監督下多利用同儕評鑑 (peer review)。
◆學習是兩面的,學生不能只依賴老師的批改! 如不立刻更正和主動學習修改錯誤,那錯誤糾正會變的無效,甚至是有害的!
◆理解學習是階段性的! 學習者必須明確理解,並跟老師溝通自己短期和長期的語言學習目標。
4. 那學習者和老師通常要注意什麼錯誤呢?
◆影響溝通上的錯誤。
◆一再出現的錯誤。
◆跟學習者的學習目標有直接相關的錯誤 (e.g. 中級及進階學習者
可多注意影響文章 accuracy 的錯誤)。
