Egypt’s Suez Canal: a maritime choke point
The 400-meter long, 220,000-ton MV [motor vessel ( )] Ever Given, classed as a so-called “megaship,” veered ( ) off course during a gale-force ( ) duststorm ( ).
The 59-meter-wide Taiwan-run, Panama-flagged vessel became stuck ( ) near the southern end of the Suez Canal, diagonally ( ) blocking the man-made ( ) waterway ( ) that connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.
Opened 150 years ago, Egypt’s Suez Canal has been regularly expanded ( ) and modernized, and it is today capable of ( ) accommodating ( ) some of the world’s largest supertankers ( ), handling roughly 10 percent of international maritime trade. In 2019 around 50 ships used the canal daily, compared with three in 1869.
The majority ( ) of oil transported by sea passes through the Suez Canal, which is the fastest crossing ( ) from the North Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean, but demands hefty ( ) passage tolls ( ). The journey between ports in the Persian Gulf and London, for example, is roughly halved ( ) by going through the Suez Canal compared to the alternate ( ) route via the southern tip of Africa.
Most of the cargo ( ) traveling from the Persian Gulf to Western Europe is oil. In the opposite direction, it is mostly manufactured goods and grain ( ) from Europe and North America headed to the Far East and Asia.
The latest blockage ( ) highlights ( ) the risks faced by the shipping industry as more and more vessels transit ( ) maritime choke points including the Suez and Panama canals, the Strait of Hormuz and Southeast Asia’s Malacca Strait. Those routes ( ) are also having to accommodate increasingly larger ships that are more complex ( ) to rescue, while the container-carrying capacity of vessels has doubled in the past decade.

Listen to my May’s NTS Radio show, takeover by LICA & Clansie Cheng Daoyuan, each 30mins mix from Taiwan, Japan, and South East Asia’s punk, Metal, Indie Rocks 🎧 https://www.nts.live/shows/meuko-meuko/episodes/meuko-meuko-24th-may-2021
“To connect, and condense any possibility formed by the joint force of people." is the core of LICA’ s concept. Started with a photography project Nowhere_non - which captures experimental, metal and punk scenes in 2019, she began her sound project LICA in 2020 and released “reverse” at Taipei noise label Karma Detonation Tapes. Shortly after her Indonesia shows, she started a new project Sundialll with Ramaputratantra. Now she’s involved in the Taipei punk organization Suck Glue Boys, led by their commitment to promoting extreme music culture.
Cheng Daoyuan is a Taipei-based multi-media creator whose work spans sound, visual and installation. After his first oversea shows in Tokyo, he released his debut album “Apeiron” in 2019, also featured on numerous compilations released by labels from Europe and Asia. In 2020, he performed at Nexus Experience presented by MUTEK X Currents.fm, and made his first 7.1-channel ambisonic sound design at NTMoFA, currently in residence of HKCR and Currents.fm.

Embroidery is an ancient form of needlework that has been used worldwide to embellish textiles for decorative and communicative purposes, and like many needle arts, is believed to have originated in Asia and the Middle East. While it is not known when embroidery art arrived in Vietnam, tribute is often paid to Lê Công Hành (1606-1661), who served as Vietnam’s envoy to China during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Lê Công Hành is believed to have combined both Chinese and Vietnamese embroidery artistry creating the unique technique employed in Vietnam today. His hometown of Quất Động is now known for its collective skill in this craft.
Today, Thuy Design House juxtaposes traditional and contemporary techniques using a combination of 3D embroidery, collage and painting known as tranh gói vải, a technique pioneered in the 20th century by Mr. Trần Văn Huy (known as Thủy Tiên), in Sa Đéc province, Southern Vietnam.
The artwork is displayed at "Nature and Symbolism", An Everyday Dream exhibition:
Collection: Lúng Liếng (Fluttering Eyes)
Material: beading and 3D silk embroidery on oragnza

For a Southern California and Saigon guy like me, this winter storm was definitely a first. I never experienced snow until recently and definitely not as a kid, so it made me really think about growing up in warmer weather and all the people who have never experienced snow before and all those who go through it yearly.
I finally get the Simpsons and Home Alone.

Chinese Tank Shells and Grenades that contain Alcohol?
Baijiu (Chinese: 白酒; pinyin: báijiǔ), also known as shaojiu or archaically as sorghum wine, is a Chinese alcoholic beverage made from grain. Báijiǔ literally means "white (clear) alcohol" or liquor, and is a strong distilled spirit, generally between 40 and 60% alcohol by volume (ABV).
Báijiǔ is a clear liquid usually distilled from fermented sorghum, although other grains may be used; southern China versions may employ glutinous rice, while northern Chinese varieties may use wheat, barley, millet, or even Job's tears instead of sorghum. The jiuqu starter culture used in the production of baijiu mash is usually made of pulverized wheat grains.
Because of its clarity, baijiu can appear similar to several other East Asian liquors, but it generally has a significantly higher alcohol content than, for example, Japanese shōchū (25%) or Korean soju (20–45%). It is closer to vodka in strength and mouth-feel.
二锅头, èrguōtóu, lit. "head of the second pot" is a strong, clear distilled liquor. It is often inexpensive and thus particularly popular among blue-collar workers across northern and northeastern China. It is probably the most commonly-drunk baijiu in Beijing and is frequently associated with that city. Red Star 红星, Hóngxīng is a popular brand.

Cơm tấm, or broken rice, is a Vietnamese dish made from rice with fractured rice grains. Tấm refers to the broken rice grains, while cơm refers to cooked rice. Also known as Cơm tấm Sài Gòn (Saigon-style broken rice), particularly served in southern Vietnam, in Saigon.
It is usually served with grilled pork (either ribs or shredded) plus the Vietnamese dish bì (thinly shredded pork mixed with cooked and thinly shredded pork skin) over broken rice. The rice and meat are served with various greens and pickled vegetables, along with a prawn paste cake, trứng hấp (steamed egg), and grilled prawns. Typically, restaurants will serve this popular combination rice plate with a small bowl of nước mắm, as well as a small bowl of soup broth (canh) with garlic chives (to cleanse the throat). The dish cơm tấm bì comes with a chả trứng egg meatloaf.
The main ingredient, broken rice, is a traditionally cheaper grade of rice produced by damage in milling. It is mainly used as a food industry ingredient in America and Europe, but in West Africa and South East Asia is used for human consumption. Broken rice is fragmented, not defective; there is nothing wrong with it. It is as nutritious as the equivalent unbroken rice (i.e. if all the germ and bran remains, it is as nutritious as brown rice; if none remains, it is only as nutritious as white rice).
