HONG KONG – United Mutants is the name of the game. From May 30 - July 30, 2013, LAM Tak Ming Chris, Hong Kong artist collaborates with other local artists alike to express their views on society, discrimination and life in general at brand new affordable art gallery, Concept2 located in Central, Hong Kong. The concept of United Mutants was inspired by Hardcore Punk band from the 80’s – United Mutation. Songs from United Mutation depicts their views on society and how the society is judgmental to those who are slightly different from their idea of the “norm”.

To voice out such issues, in particular, LAM also finds resonance in the type of music that revolves around social issues. Hardcore and Extreme metal is a main influence of his express choice of style, driving him to express certain madness through the drawings. The music and his paintings may look violent, yet they bring on a positive “straight edge” message. To enhance the edginess of the aggressive figures, Chris creates his paintings on raw wood, school desks, leather and other unconventional canvases.


The idea of LAM’s work revolves around the need for justice in this modern society, how the world perceives it and the world through his eyes – no matter how extreme it may appear to be. One of the art pieces, “We are just a minor threat” is a perfect example, here LAM takes inspiration from band, Minor Threat and reflects on how artists are actually just ordinary people, but because of the way they think may be different from everyone else’, they are treated as “freaks of society”. They get picked on at school, they don’t have friends and more extreme, the government sets laws to disengage their freedom to express. The reason why Japanese is used in this piece is because the Japanese have a higher tolerance and respect for creativity thus the artist can only express these feelings in a foreign language.


Unlike most other collaborative art exhibitions, where each artist features their own artwork, United Mutants is truly united. Mutants are considered as outcasts; however LAM “unites” those who are different and finds that each person has their own unique talent. Each of the four artists will be collaborating with LAM on the individual artworks, such as the wristband, where LAM will be creating the illustration and the leather artists from Leatherism Handmade Products will be recreating onto handmade leather bands. Other artists involved in this exhibition includes Garment artist (Chantel Ho), Painter (Jlee 360), Illustrator (Zoie Lam@Zlism) and Chinese porcelain artist (Joey Leung) who will be creating Chinese-style porcelain designs (Late Qing style) on wood.


LAM’s United Mutants exhibition opens the door of brand new contemporary art gallery, Concept2. The gallery is conveniently located in the hub of Central Business District in On Hing Building (same building as Play night club and Levels night club), showcasing a host of affordable art from prominent contemporary to daring skate art.

'She's my son' tells the story of Suganya from her mother's point of view. "He", before the sex change, had the courage to face the reality and today, as "she", stroll the road confidently with her family and friends accepting the reality as she did.


Shes My Son- This film tackles a strong thought-provoking topic by telling the personal story of a Malaysian transexual woman and her mother. Sugania and Samsed are fascinating characters. Shes My Son has an intriguing opening a sort of transsexual creation myth that has been all but forgotten. - Shanon Shah
