#GHOSTNETS WARRIORS!!! May 26, 2019. 8:30AM. Bogo Shoal Ghostnets Removal. 1st wave of ghost net warriors at 15 strong of regular & new SEAKNIGHTS recruits + volunteers. Swam out south of the floating guard house where ghost net to be retrieved was situated. 5 mins. to the dive, the objective was located at 10 meter depth. 25 mins. "battle" and the ghost nets were floated out to the surface for hauling in by the waiting boat. Next encounter is with the crisscrossing nylon fishing lines also entangled among the corals. Collection of assorted plastic bags, sachets, wrappers & the ubiquitous disposable diapers while roaming the sea bottom for another 30 mins.followed. Two distant & one loud dynamite blast was heard during the one hour "battle" dive. Still no respite for the corals with the DESTRUCTIVE BLAST FISHING EVEN ON A SUNDAY! Just like in the previous Sunday dives.
12:30PM. 2nd wave of 7 brave SEAKNIGHTS Warriors. Brave in a sense that horizontal visibility was limited to 5-7 meters. It was still slack tide on swimming out southeast from the floating guardhouse. Ghost net to be retrieved is separate from the net retrieved in the morning dive. Took 10 mins. to locate due to poor visibility. Nets were then untangled from already dead covered corals and floated in for recovery in the surface. Unfortunately, the straps to the floaters give way to the weight of approx. 30 meter long recovered net. Hopefully, the recovered ghost nets fell into the deeper part without corals. High tide current going away from Bogo Shoal & northward was acting up. Towards the end of the dive, it suddenly became dark above us due to a big swath of mixed floating debris. 3/4 of it, made of seagrass, the rest, assorted plastic bags & containers, styrofoam packs & whole coconut frond. We thought a ship was above us due to the loud sound of a ship's running engine. Other divers thought it was a whale shark above them when it got dark.
At the end of today's dive we gave ourselves, a "good job" handshake underwater as soon as the ghost net got free & floated out to the surface in the morning dive. A warm & contented smile, after the second dive on our return to the shore. Another small good deed in behalf of Bogo Shoal's corals in particular, Talisay City corals in general. Lagundi Reef and Osting Shoal will follow.
