悼念Holger Czukay和Jaki Liebezeit

2017年，對於德國科隆傅奇性krautrock元老級樂隊Can的追隨者而言，這是相當傷感的一年，相繼痛失了兩名Can的團員——先是樂隊的鼓手Jaki Liebezeit在今年1月22曰因肺炎病逝，想不到相隔不夠9個月之後，Can的另一創團成員Holger Czukay則在早前於9月5日離世——而後者被發現在他的居所逝世，那裡正是昔日Can位於科隆外圍Weilerswist由舊電影院改建成的自家錄音室Inner Space。二人分別享年78歲及79歲。

樂隊結他手Michael Karoli早在2001年已英年早逝，所以Can的四位核心成員，目前只有餘下現年80歲的鍵琴手Irmin Schmidt。

今年，其實是Can邁向成軍50週年紀念。先有The Can Project在4月間於英國倫敦演出，在Irmin Schmidt領軍下帶來他與樂隊第一代歌手Malcolm Mooney復合(原定還有Jaki Liebezeit的參與)，由London Symphony Orchestra伴奏，以及前Sonic Youth的Thurston Moore和Steve Shelley等客席樂手；跟著Can亦在6月份出版了單曲全集精選專輯《The Singles》。然而隨著Jaki Liebezeit和Holger Czukay的與世長辭，2017年對於Can來說也沾染上一份哀傷。

Can能夠被公認為居功厥偉、影響力無遠弗屆的樂隊，因為在1968年正式成軍的他們正是在60年代末最先引發起德國krautrock運動的奠定性樂隊，人所共知的krautrock先鋒。所為人津津樂道，是Can得以把迷幻搖滾、車庫搖滾、藍調、爵士樂、流行曲、電子音樂、民族音樂、即興音樂、前衛音樂甚至funk、reggae來共融而成樂隊的別樹一幟krautrock音樂風格，還有成員之間透過心靈感應作即興的「速成作曲法」(instant compositions)意念，與錄音室裡把機器作為樂器之studio-as-instrument錄音室實驗，打造E.F.S.(Ethnological Forgery Series)「民族學偽造系列」作品，樂隊自言是一個「無政府主義公社」。無論你是在哪個年代認識到Can這個名字，都會體驗到他們的音樂世界最有趣的地方，就是彷彿存有無限的可能性。

而Can的另一重點，就是樂隊的四位核心成員，都是絕對獨當一面的音樂家。

正如Holger Czukay，大家都會把他稱為Can的低音結他手，但他絕不是一名低音結他手那麼簡單，同是他也是樂隊的錄音師、是調音台的「指揮」，並且負責tape music與原始sampling製作之實驗，把短波廣播(radio shortwave)作為演奏。畢竟Holger在少年時代曾於收音機維修店工作，好讓他學習到電子維修與工程的基本原理；而他跟Irmin Schmidt同是德國電子音樂之父Karlheinz Stockhausen的學生，奠定了他的學院派avant-garde音樂背境；本來Holger不諳搖滾樂，就是在一名他的學生Michael Karoli之感染下而開啓了搖滾樂的門戶，第一首叫他大開耳界的歌曲是The Beatles的1967年曲目〈I Am The Walrus〉；他簡約的低音結他演奏方式，原是因為希望不會容易出錯；作為錄音師，他認為就是樂隊對著機器作現場表演，而他覺得機器是有靈魂的。

1969年Can出版首張官方專輯《Monster Movie》之餘，同年Holger Czukay亦與Rolf Dammers聯袂以Technical Space Composer's Crew名義出版了《Canaxis 5》專輯，當中一曲〈Boat Woman Song〉裡採樣了兩把不知名的越南歌唱家唱詠，正是他最早期的sampling音樂意念，因而他亦被公認為採樣音樂先鋒、sonic先鋒、world music運動先鋒。

Holger在1977年脫離Can，隨即1978年發表其首張官方個人專輯《Movies》。他的個人音樂生涯亦同樣精采，再進一步履行短波廣播實驗與向民族音樂/第三世界音樂取經，但又不乏悅耳而媚俗的流行音樂元素。曾先後在1976年及1982年來過香港旅遊的Holger，其1984年專輯「東方紅」《Der Osten ist Rot》的主題曲便是來個扭曲詮釋《義勇軍進行曲》。而他在英國音樂單位Eurythmics及David Sylvian的唱片裡客串，為German new wave樂隊S.Y.P.H.擔任監製，再到在1988及89年先後跟David Sylvian聯袂合作的兩張ambient專輯《Plight & Premonition》和《Flux + Mutability》，都是其80年代的音樂典故。

再說Jaki Liebezeit，他本是來自60年代歐洲free jazz圈的鼓手，後來他不滿這群樂隊拒絕讓鼓手演奏和聲與簡單節拍，從而退出這圈子；同時他又受到民族音樂的神秘節奏所薰陶並學習。在Can的作品裡便開創了其「人肉鼓機」式motorik beat。當Jaki走出了Can，他在80年代初組成jazz fusion樂隊Phantom Band，到後來組成鼓樂樂團Drums off Chaos以及踏足電音舞曲範疇的Club off Chaos，他仍是一位獨樹一幟的鼓手。

Jaki Liebezeit和Holger Czukay不獨是Can的隊友關係、樂隊的rhythm section，在Can以外，Holger的多張個人專輯仍是由Jaki作為他的御用鼓手。而1982年Holger與Jaki跟Public Image Ltd低音結他手Jah Wobble聯袂合作的《Full Circle》專輯，亦屬經典。這兩位惺惺相惜的德國樂手，最終也是在同一年離開塵世。
