#dish跟plate在英國是不同東西
🇺🇸美國生活諺語:dish篇🍽
1⃣ a dish (though it's a bit old-fashioned)
2⃣ Revenge is a dish best served cold
3⃣ dish it out; sb. can dish it out, but not take it
4⃣ dish the dirt (on); dish on
--
When we say “wash the dishes,” we mean all the tableware, and even the silverware. But in English, whereas plates are usually used to eat from, dishes, which are flatter than bowls, and not as flat as plates (and sometimes have lids), are used to serve or cook food. And a dish can also refer to the food that is served in the dish. Now let’s learn some other dish-related idioms!
我們知道 wash the dishes「洗碗」是泛指洗所有的餐具,即使是銀製餐具也算在內。但是在英國,plate跟dish則是兩種不同的東西,plate 是進餐時用的淺盤,而 dish 則是比碗淺但比 plate 深的深盤(有時還附蓋子),通常是裝盛菜餚出餐或烹煮食物用。dish 也可以指該道菜。說完了,接下來就來介紹跟 dish 一字有關的諺語吧。
You know that a serving of food can be called a dish, but what if you 1⃣call a person a dish? It means they’re sexy and attractive. This expression, which sounds a little old-fashioned these days, likely has it’s origins in comparing a person to a delicious dish of food. Ex: Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!
你知道一道菜可以用 a dish 稱之,但你叫一個人a dish又是怎麼回事?其實是說那個人性感吸引力十足,「是你的菜」。儘管這個表達放在現在已經有點過時,就跟拿一道菜來比喻一個人一樣過氣。如:Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!(哇,那個妹有夠正的──是天菜。)
Besides food, what else can be served on dishes? Revenge! Have you ever heard the proverb, 2⃣“Revenge is a dish best served cold”? It means that revenge is most satisfying when one takes the time to plan it carefully and carry it out when your enemy least suspects it, rather than immediately after one is wronged. This expression has existed for hundreds of years, but it was made popular when it appeared in the 1982 movie, Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Ex: A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold.
除了食物,還有什麼可以裝在盤子上?仇恨!你有聽過俗語「君子報仇三年不晚」(Revenge is a dish best served cold)嗎?指與其立即復仇,花時間慢慢計畫再實行,讓敵人放下戒心之後再復仇,這樣會更令人滿足。1982年電影《星艦迷航記2: 星戰大怒吼》讓這個存在已經好幾百年的老俗語再次流行起來。如:A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? 你怎麼能忍受他這樣對待你? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold. 我不會繼續忍下去的,但是君子報仇三年不晚。
As a verb, dish means “to serve,” and is the basis of a number of expressions. To 3⃣“dish it out” means to criticize or insult, and is often used in the idiom, “sb. can dish it out, but not take it,” which is used to describe people who are quick to criticize others, but can’t take criticism themselves. Ex: A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.
dish當動詞指「上菜」,也延伸出好幾種諺語用法。dish it out指「批評,侮辱」,常出現在sb. can dish it out, but not take it.這個諺語中,指「愛批評他人卻批評不得的人」。如:A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. 我不明白為什麼凱倫會這麼膚淺。B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.是啊,她愛批評別人,但見不得別人批評她。
Another idiom with dish as a verb is 4⃣“dish the dirt (on),” which means to gossip about someone or something. Ex: Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt. The expression “dish on” also has the same meaning. Ex: Why are you always dishing on Patricia?
另一個dish當動詞的諺語是dish the dirt on,指「八卦某事或某人」。如Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt.(咱們坐下來喝杯茶聊八卦吧。)也可以用dish on表示:Why are you always dishing on Patricia?(為什麼你總是在八卦派翠西亞?)

refer to as用法 在 Claudia Mo/毛孟靜 Facebook 的最佳解答
- He is a master designer of haute couture. 他是高檔時裝的一個大師級設計師。
當今潮流時興回到自然,衣着追求簡便舒適,貴價衣服開始沒有市場了。看下面這句:
- Wine is in danger of suffering the same fate as haute couture : facing a fast-shrinking number of consumers. 酒業的前景,恐怕跟高檔時裝一樣:面對急速縮小的顧客人數。
Couture 本身指 sewing 縫紉、dressmaking 做衣服。常常有人誤會 couture 即是英文的 culture 文化;也有人淨係把 couture 套用去其他貴價奢華物事,其實都是錯的。
網上有這麼一句批評:Ignorant Americans mixed this up and now they use "couture" to refer to high end or luxury things. So next time you walk past a bakery offering "bagel couture", feel free to call them idiots, unless they actually sew their bagels.
同義詞有 trendy 潮流的、innovative 創新的、pioneering 開荒的、revolutionary 革命性的、futuristic 未來的、ahead of the times 走在時代前頭。
看到這許多同義詞,對 avant-garde 都有個大概的念頭了吧。用做形容詞:
- When the designer introduced his avant-garde fashion line, he shocked quite a few old-school critics. 當設計師推出他的前衞時裝系列之際,令一些傳統的評論人老大嚇了一跳。
用做名詞:
- He was an enthusiast for the avant-garde. 他是前衛藝術的擁護者。
也有 motif 一字,讀 mo-teef ,跟 motive 動機的意思不完全一樣,多指衣服飾物設計中重複出現的圖案、標誌。市面上常常見到國際時裝品牌不就把自己的註冊 logo,用於產品之上,之謂 iconic motif 。
- She was wearing a black shirt with a colourful tulip motif. 她穿着一件黑色、有許多彩色鬱金香圖案的襯衫。
Motif 自然也可以用於其他創作,包括文學:
- The room is one of the recurring motifs in the playwright’s work. 房間是這個劇作家作品中的一個主題意境。

[詞彙區別] people, individual, persons, human, man, mankind, humankind 的區別:
★★★human (human being) ★★★
我們使用human being這個字來強調我們和動物的不同。 We used human being to stress our difference from animals or aliens (in science fiction).
1. Dogs can hear much better than humans.
2. That is no way to treat another human being.
★★★man★★★
我們用man這個字來指男性、全部的人類、或指特定某一時代的人類。 We used man to talk about adult male human or humans as a group (or humans from a particular period of history).
1. The relationships between men and women are often complex and puzzling.
2. This is one of the worst diseases known to man.
3. Man had caused considerable damage to the environment.
4. Being a modern man today is no different than it was a century ago. It’s all about adhering to principle.
★★★mankind★★★
我們用mankind這個字來強調全部人類這個概念。 We used mankind when we talk about all humans as one large group.
1. Pollution is something that harms mankind across the globe, and disasters like war and famine have affected mankind all through our history.
*Man和mankind傳統上一直是用來指所有的男性和女性。很多人現在偏好使用humanity這個字和humankind來避掉性別歧視的問題。
Man and mankind have traditionally been used to mean “all men and women.” Many people now prefer to use humanity, the human race, human beings or people to avoid being sexist. Humankind is used as a gender neutral alternative to “mankind.”
★★★person★★★
person這個字是指人的單數。A person in the singular to refer to any human being.
1. He was a very nice person, always pleasant and friendly.
Persons 是 person的複數,是一個在文件或法律條文中使用的單字。
Persons (plural) is a very formal word. We only use it in rather legalistic contexts:
1. Any person or persons found in possession of illegal substances will be prosecuted.
2. The police are looking for three separate persons who were in this area.
People 也是person的複數,可指所有的人類或特定狀況中的一群人。它也可以指所有的國民。
People can refer to all human beings, or to a group of persons in a particular situation. It can also mean "all the citizens," as in a political leader who understands the needs of the people.
1. There were at least a thousand people in the audience.
2. The people are tired of hearing political rhetoric! They want action, not talk.
★★★individual★★★
我們用individual來強調個人以和團體做區隔。We used individual to stress that a person considered separately rather than as part of a group.
1. Every individual has rights which must never be taken away.
2. Three separate individuals walked into my store.
除了以上的用法,同學也可以用代名詞 (e.g. everyone, they) 來替換”人們” 這個單字,也可以用形容詞來更明確的指出某一群人(e.g. most, some, a few, all)。
Summary:
✎ 通常會用"people"這個詞彙來指稱一般的社會大眾;另一方面,如果想要去強調一個團體當中的每個人,則會使用"individuals"。
✎ 想要將所有人類當成一個大族群去做論述的時候,通常只會用"mankind/humankind"或是"the human race/human beings"等詞彙。
✎ 想要去強調一個人的人性面時,通常會用"human being"。
E.g. How could you do this to another human being? He has rights!
✎撰寫科學性質的相關文章時,才會運用到"Homo sapiens"。
