English after Mandarin
Philippe Daverio, an Italian art critic, says real art includes interpretations from different perspectives and should be ambiguous or unpredictable. I think Havana, as a true city of art, genuinely reflects that unpredictability.
My first impression of Cuba came from the Havana airport with that strong socialistic flavor. The angular exterior of the terminal looks exactly like one of those Transformer robots who might spring to life and battle at any second. This coincides with the concept of neo-futurism buildings which stresses the link between buildings and their surroundings. A great example is the angular toad-like Guangzhou Opera House. All that imagination accords with the so-called ambiguity of art.
Inside the terminal is the red immigration cubicles with that yellow tint, which gives a sense of incongruity combining passion with seemingly cold communism. That reminds me of the Cuban guy next to me on the plane who was humming songs all the time. Music can also be found on the boarding gate shuttle as well as the taxi I rode to downtown Havana. I was perplexed.
I asked the cab driver where he learned his English. He replied that English was one of the foreign language options in school, but English was not considered important. He then started to talked about how Obama helped boost Cuba’s economy with the loosened US-Cuban tension. It was unfortunate since Trump swore in and everything had been beaten down including the travel and real estate industries. I could still spot the change from young people’s fashionable outfits. It felt like Cuba was not the old Cuba that I learned from the travel guide. Everything about Cuba was yet to be explored.
By all means, Havana is no heaven for English speakers. From the moment I decided to find a casa/guest house on my own, my puny Spanish vocabulary was forced to work hard. (Yeah, I only know about a couple of hundred words. Shame on me!) The good thing is that I downloaded Spanish on my Google Translate in advance. Plus I hired a private tutor to learn Spanish phonics. I somehow managed to communicate with the locals. Sometimes, I doubted how I was going to open up this mysterious nation with my lousy Spanish.
The first thing I did after I checked into a casa was to follow my routine as a traveler and find a supermarket. Who would have known that this idea completely did not work here. In some residential areas of Old Havana, shop signs simply do not exist. This probably means most people in the community know each other, and thus are aware of where to go to find services they need without shop signs. That translated into my predicament as I tried to find some bottled water in the neighborhood. I literally asked for directions with my broken Spanish, Donde esta el agua? Following three kind passersby’s help in three different directions, I found a nice guy who took me to an inconspicuous window where I finally obtained two very precious bottles of water, which took me 30 minutes for this entire water-getting process.
En route to finding water, I saw a bakery producing only toast and rolls in batch, a shop selling only cigarettes and liquors, a restaurant with simple tables and chairs, and a barbershop that you can see it all at a glance. Everything here ran basically without the packaging of capitalistic shop signs. Because of my ignorance of Cuba, I started to shift my attention to the sounds made between the mottled streets and faded buildings. Deep frying noises from a pan, music from the radio, a rooster’s crowing, pounding bass from a car stereo, hola from a passerby, smackers from a husband to his wife, a chihuahua’s barking, and someone talking on a public phone—I was walking in the middle of a small street listening to the heart beats of Old Havana. Where I was standing is surely not the tourist-flooded Obispo pedestrian zone. Regardless, my perception about what a city ought to be was totally overthrown by the things I experienced initially.
My first impression about Cuba was novel yet hard to understand with the common sense. I felt I needed to let go of my expectations for the country. Perhaps, that way I could grasp a touch of the unpredictable art that only belongs to Cuba.

My dad often said to me "don't always travel alone. You should find some partners!" (Which probably also implies he wants me to find a partner for the journey of life ASAP, haha.) Indeed I'm very used to traveling alone, and it's often hard to find people to join my trip, but occasionally I made exceptions -- due to lack of public transit or high cost, in some places I'd join tour groups. This is what I'm doing today and the next two days, on my way to Sahara.
We crossed over Atlas Mountain, the ridge of North Africa. The north of the mountain has typical Mediterranean climate, and it was quite rainy when I visited, to the extent that I was concerned about the trip; the other side of the mountain, however, has arid climate similar to Californian inland. The rain only went as far as the mountain ridge, and stopped as snow on tope of the ridge. The snow-capped ridge looked like chocolate cake with icing on top. The other side of the mountain was quite nice and sunny.
Most buildings are made from mud, and thus retain the brown-red color of the land. Even contemporary buildings made from bricks still match this local style. Our major stop is Aït Benhaddou, previously a Berber village and later became a well-preserved ancient city. It has been featured in many films with north Africa and middle East backgrounds. Particularly, many of the "Bible movies" in 1970-1990 were shot here, and the latest on-screen appearance is on the game of thrones. The beauty here, however, comes at the cost of ambitious locals, who would try everything they can do make to buy things.
Lastly about the "partners" I found in this group -- while English is the common language, none of us are born in a English-speaking country. Nationalities include: Belgium, Slavokia, Poland, Italy, Japan and China. This gave me good opportunities to practice foreign languages, especially Japanese. Even listening to Italian conversations make me realize its similarity to Spanish. What a bonus!
They'll be my peers to Sahara tomorrow. Look forward to it :)

Stranger corrects errors on friendly postcard from Argentina: 'Learn English!'
A postcard sent to Canada from Buenos Aires arrived with the text – ‘I west thinking in you, Have a nice day’ corrected with a red pen and a ‘mean’ note.
The postcard featuring an aerial view of the Plaza de la República in Buenos Aires was meant as a thoughtful gesture from a longtime friend.
But as it made its way from Argentina to Toronto, its error-laden English provoked someone to take to the text with a red pen, correcting errors and scrawling a note that read: “ps Learn English!!”
The act left Mirella Zisko stunned. The postcard had been sent to her by a former colleague, now in his 60s, who had emigrated to Canada from Argentina and learned English as a second language.
Oscar’s original message – “I west thinking in you, Have a nice day” – had been marked up with red pen, much like how a teacher would tackle a student’s essay.
她的前同事奧斯卡原本寫的是“I west thinking in you, Have a nice day”,已經被人用紅筆批改,像老師批改學生的文章一樣。
His words had been crossed out to adjust the message to “I was thinking of you.” The meddler had also added their own note to the postcard – “Learn English!!” – directed at Oscar and underlined twice for emphasis.
他寫的字詞被劃掉,改為“I was thinking of you.”
“First I was mad and then I just felt upset for him,” Zisko told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “He’s such a good friend and he’s an older gentleman and I just felt hurt for him that someone would go out of their way to be mean.” She hadn’t had the heart to tell him what had happened to the postcard, she added.
The act drew fury from her university-age daughter, said Zisko. “She’s like, ‘This is wrong, this is racist. It’s 2017. Who has the right to do this?’”
While it remains unclear where exactly in the mailing process the postcard was tampered with, Zisko has filed a complaint over the incident with Canada Post. The corrections were more likely to have happened in Canada, she reasoned, than in Spanish-speaking Argentina.
On Thursday, the postal operator called the incident “an extremely rare occurrence” and said it was continuing to monitor the situation.
“It is truly unfortunate that Ms Zisko’s postcard was marked-up and we can certainly understand why she would be upset,” a spokesperson for Canada Post said. “With many hands touching the postcard before and after it entered Canada, it is impossible to determine where and when the marking may have occurred.”

Hello friends! A highly requested video is finally up! ?
I'm using an HSK vocabulary book, but you can use any resource like a novel, an article, a textbook or even a TV show to find new words. I color code my notes and color code the tones so I can associate a tone with a color.
In one notebook, I list the Chinese characters in black, the pinyin pronunciation in orange, and the Korean or English meaning in black. The circle with a number in it indicates which HSK level the vocab word is for. Example sentences are written in red, and when I need to, I'll rewrite the characters as much as I can until I memorize it.
Then I transfer the words without pinin to a separate notebook and only write the meaning. I then underline the characters with a color according to its tone.
PS: Some of you may notice my vocab is in simplified and one of my example sentences in traditional. I use both!

Shaved snow served by Wooly's.
"Shaved snow is a hybrid between shaved ice and ice cream. By taking a block of ice made with low-fat milk, flavors are infused into the blocks before it is frozen, and then shave it very fine to create a texture similar to fresh fallen snow."
Flavors available are Original Leche, Coffee, and Melon. Optional toppings include Strawberry, Blueberry, Coconut Flakes, Mochi, Pocky Sticks, Cookies 'n Cream, Graham Cracker Crumble, Captain Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Corn Flakes, Sea Salt Leche, Chocolate Drizzle, Whipped Cream, and Strawberry Cream.
"Snow ice"—cream, milk, water, sugar and fruit, frozen and then shaved and served in cones—is popular in Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia and making inroads into the United States.

Commonly, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or sweetened azuki beans is first added to the bottom of the cup and is capped with condensed milk.
Vendors in Texas and northern Mexico serve finely shaved ice desserts. Called a raspa, they are usually sold from a roadside stand or trailer. They come in many flavors, including leche (milk and cinnamon) and picosito (the Spanish word for 'spicy' made with lemon and chili powder.)
The dessert ais kacang served in Malaysia and Singapore is another form of shaved ice. Ais kacang was originally served with red beans but now includes various fruits and other sweet toppings.
In Japan they are known as kakigori, and in India it is called a "gola" and usually served on popsicle sticks.
In Britain the term snow cone has been used for a standard ice cream cone topped with (usually vanilla) ice cream, hence the term snow cone.
In Perú this dessert is called Raspadilla, which is served in cups along with a spoon and/or a straw. It consists in ground ice which is thick and topped with juices of different flavors that can be combined, regularly the most common flavors are pineapple and strawberry juices but it can also be served with berries juice, passion fruit juice (maracuya), chicha morada (purple corn juice), and in some cases but uncommon it can be topped with condensed milk or yogurt. Its very popular in the beaches during summertime, but it also is consumed in the towns and the cities as well. It is sold in carts spread around some streets and avenues of the city, being prepared at the moment (some of them grind the ice in a block with a device or some spoon with a blade like razor in one end, others yet hace the ice already ground stored in a coolerbox) but all of them serve the portion of ice in the cup in front of the customer and then ask which flavor of juice would be poured on top of the ice, then they put a spoon and the straw.
Kala Khatta is a syrup made from the jambul fruit in India and some other parts of South Asia. It is primarily used as a flavoring for Indian ice lollipops or popsicles, sold as street food. Crushed ice is formed into a lump by hand and mounted on a stick to make the lollipop. Kala khatta syrup and seasonings such as salt and pepper are then poured on the lollipop.
