BFHH Exclusive - Food Label 1
🔍🔍🔍🔍
Ideally, we 'homemade' everything. But, in reality, there bounds to be time we just need some ready made ingredients to help us to whip up a quick meal for our family. For example, having a can of store bought pasta sauce in our pantry, will come in handy on a particular day when we have no fresh tomato at home.
Although I enjoy making food from scratch, I do keep a can at home too. 😂😂😂 However, I will try my best to make sure my purchase best fit my top concern regarding food items, which is, to be as natural as possible with the least chemical addictives added.
Let's start our 'BFHH Exclusive' series with the first item - Pasta Sauce. We will compare based on ingredients listed but not the taste, nutritional facts or price.
By reading the ingredients list, you can gain a lot of insights about the products.
Randomly I picked up 4 different brands of Napolitana Sauce from NTUC.
1. Leggo's, 500g, $4.05
2. San Remo, 500g, $4.95
3. Barilla, 500g, $3.95
4. Alce Nero (organic), 350g, $5.50 ( $7.85 for 2 )
Besides ingredients we are familiar with like tomato, onion, herbs etc, No1-3 all contains 'flavours' or 'flavoring'. This may be a concern, as companies are not required to list in details. Most likely, it will be chemical additives.
No1 contains thickener (1442), although it may be originated from cereal but still, it's chemically derived. No1 also contains 'reconstituted' tomato. Huh, what's that??? Tomato in other forms??🤔🤔🤔 It means it was made from concentrated puree. Manufacturer usually remove the water content from fresh food for pratical consideration like storage etc. This extra process usually means loss of more nutrients and flavours. Hence, addictives are added to make up the loss. Not my choice.
No2 contains 'natural colour' . The source remains a mystery.
No4, in comparisons, contains simple ingredients. No need to be a science teacher to understand. Extra virgin olive oil is the best among all four samples too.
So, which one will be my choice?
None of the above. My personal choice will be just a simple, Organic Chunky Tomato Puree which contains just one ingredient. Tomato. The seasoning can be easily achieved from any kitchen. Yes, and it's organically grown which means lesser chemical fertilizer/ pesticide and it won't be genetic modified.
Although all food additives are legal and permitted but i will still prefer to keep it to the min. When comes to food, simple is better.

1. Leggo's, 500g, $4.05
2. San Remo, 500g, $4.95
3. Barilla, 500g, $3.95
4. Alce Nero (有机), 350g, $3.92 ( $7.85 for 2 )
