Like all my favourite works of literature, The Way We Go by Joel Tan / Checkpoint Theatre is grand, complex, and deeply moving in the simplest and quietest of ways. In it I heard the voices of my parents, siblings, teachers, old lovers… reviving snatches of memory I never knew have stuck with me all my life. Naturalism at its best! but masterfully arranged into a non-linear series of vignettes that mirror, contrast, and inform each other at every point along the way… and which ultimately build a rich yet entirely relatable story.
Aiyah, I ramble. In short: brilliant directing, lovely writing, and a stellar cast. Everybody needs to see it! There’s something in it for everyone: it’s as funny as it is poignant, very insightful, and chillingly real. The play runs till next Saturday, 29 Nov!
