The incredible JoAnn Hunter.
I met her in London, winter 2008. At that time, I was working for Shiki Theatre Company in Japan, and I was sent to London to observe the entire process of the London premiere of Spring Awakening getting mounted by the Broadway creative team. I translated the book and lyrics of the show into Japanese with my team and I had the honor of serving as Assistant Director for the Japanese premiere production of Spring Awakening. A few months after we met, JoAnn came to Japan as Supervisor. Two months of setting the show with her, being in the same room with her, I learned more than I could have imagined. The room was always filled with joy, loving energy, passion, kindness and encouragement. I was so grateful for the opportunity to lead the company and be in charge of maintaining the authenticity of the show. But I realized that my passion for performing wasn’t quite done yet. Soon after the show opened in Japan, I decided to move back to the US to pursue performing again. Who could have imagined that nine years later, in the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, I’d play the same role of “Yvette” that JoAnn played in the original run, and 11 years after meeting, I’d be performing in a show that she choreographed. I had cherished the beautiful pearl bracelet that she gave me on opening night in 2008, and it was surreal and humbling to wear it last night at the opening of Cinderella. I could have never expected or planned this. Crazy miracles do happen. Life is beautiful because it’s unpredictable. All I can say is live each moment fully, wholeheartedly with gratitude, and it will lead you to where you’re meant to be.
