You may have seen or read the news about the first ever captured photo of a black hole.
This black hole is not in our own Milky Way galaxy, but in another galaxy (named M87) far, far away – 50 million light years away. It is huge, 6.5 billion times as heavy as the sun. The Milky Way black hole is smaller and closer – “only” 4 million times the sun’s mass, and 26,000 light years away. Astronomers have not succeeded in getting its picture yet.
The photo was created using data from a linked network of 8 radio telescopes spread across 4 continents, named the Event Horizon Telescope. This remarkable achievement is a fascinating read: https://eventhorizontelescope.org/
