📹 瑪賽爾·麥耶演奏德布西的「快樂島」

Marcelle Meyer was born on this day in 1897. The outstanding French pianist trained with Alfred Cortot and Ricardo Viñes, who had premiered many works by Debussy and Ravel, and she worked directly with these composers and many others at the time. Debussy first heard her at the premiere performance of Satie's Parade in 1917 and then coached her on how to play his Préludes.

Meyer's recording of the Préludes never made it to LP - the label went bankrupt prior to its publication - but it was issued on CD in the late 1980s, and soon after so was this stupendous unpublished recording of Debussy's L'isle joyeuse. (Unfortunately, none of the CDs ever had the fullness of sound and tonal range of the original LPs ... a tremendous shame.) As always, Meyer plays with extraordinary clarity of texture, flawless technique, rhythmic vitality, supple phrasing, and sensual nuancing, all of which make her playing utterly beguiling.
