A line in Dick Lee’s ‘Home’ goes “sail down the river which brings us life”. This was the Singapore River which winds through our city.
The song came to mind yesterday as Berita Harian Singapura wrapped up its 60th birthday celebrations by commemorating the Singapore River clean-up in 1977. It was ironic at the time – while the river brought trade and life to Singapore, it was so filthy that it couldn’t sustain life by itself! The cleanup proved that what seemed an impossible task could be completed with will and determination.
BH, much like the River, has gone through renewal of its own, constantly refreshing its layout to appeal to younger readers. This has helped BH become a mainstay of the Malay community over its history.
The river cleanup exhibition takes place at the Merchant Court Hotel by the Singapore River over the next four days, if you want to visit it too. Congratulations, and happy birthday, BH!
