Taiwan is an island, but previous decades of martial law prevented
people from getting near the sea. This meant people still had an
inhibition about exploring the surrounding waters even years after
martial law was lifted in 1987.
Two retirees -- James Chang and Jeremy Chen -- both in their 60s,
challenged this mindset. In 2018, they used a 14-feet wooden boat they
had built to sail around the island in 26 days, stopping at different
fishing ports to spend the night. In doing so, they became the first
people to sail around Taiwan in a sailing dinghy.
Chen, who had been drawn to the sea from a young age but only sailed
for the first time at age 50, recently published a book called
"Sailing Around Formosa in a Self-Built Dinghy," which chronicles
their months-long adventure, from building the boat to setting sail.
The more than 1,000-kilometer journey taught them not only how to
navigate a boat in Taiwan's surrounding waters under sometimes rough sea conditions, it also exposed them to the impact of human
activity on the marine ecology.
Along the way, they discovered the importance of friendship and the
meaning of life.

There is, however, another possibility. Both in Taiwan, during the Martial Law period and when the government decided to crack down on several groups in 1996, and in Mainland China, religious and spiritual movements the authorities do not approve of are labeled xie jiao. The expression is often translated in English as “cults,” or “evil cults,” but the translation is not precise and somewhat anachronistic.
Wu Junqing, a research fellow at London University, has published several studies on the history of the notion of xie jiao, including the book Mandarins and Heretics (Leiden: Brill, 2017). While other scholars date the introduction of xie jiao as a political and legal category to the Ming era, Wu shows that it first appeared, with the meaning of “heterodox teachings,” in the writings of Fu Yi (554–639), who called for the eradication of Buddhism during the Tang dynasty. In the subsequent Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279–1368) dynasties, xie jiao was used to call for the destruction of new religious movements banned under the common label of “White Lotus.” With the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), xie jiao became a legal concept, and lists of xie jiao started being compiled, a practice continued by the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), Republican, and Communist China, and which also influenced Taiwan.

Summary on the violent acts in Yuen Long Station on 21/Jul (Sun) and the joint petition by operating staff

At 2245 hours, staff who were on duty at Yuen Long Station on the West Rail Line have noticed that when some members of the public were displaying banners in the station concourse, there were quarrels and assaults breaking out simultaneously and passengers were injured. Hong Kong Police was immediately requested to attend the scene by the Operations Control Centre
During the course, the station fire alert had also been activated, with various reports made separately to the 999 hotline by other members of the public at the scene. Paramedics of the Fire Services Department arrived promptly to provide assistance to those who were injured; however, the police was nowhere to be seen for a prolonged period
Because the operating staff could no longer ensure the safety of passengers and also due to the fact that some station staff had been physically assaulted, the Operations Control Centre quickly arranged Yuen Long Station was to be closed straightaway while dispatching an empty train to pick up those passengers who were still at the station
At the time, there was a normal, timetabled service 08 standing at Platform 1 - to Tuen Mun. However, the doors being blocked then failed during the incident and the multiple Passenger Alarm Devices being operated had caused a traction system lock-up on this train, meaning this service had to be withdrawn
Although the Operations Control Centre had instructed all services to resume calling at Yuen Long Station from 2319 hours in order to enable passengers to leave the violent scene
The emergency services had to investigate the incident inside the station and to assist those who were injured. As a result, Yuen Long Station had to be closed again after 2350 hours, while the Operations Control Centre continued to arrange train services to pick up the affected passengers
Dr Jacob Kam, the Chief Executive Officer of the MTR Corporation, strongly condemns the violent acts that took place on the railway premises and the Corporation shall fully co-operate with the investigation by the law enforcement authorities. On behalf of the MTR Corporation, he has also offers his sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured passengers

-
Furthermore, MTR Service Update would like to use this opportunity to publish the joint petition by operating staff:
There has been no precedence of railway premises being turned into the scene of bashing; the standing procedure assumes that Hong Kongers would observe the law when they travel on the MTR. Station staff are no substitutes of professional security and unlike some countries, the police is not here to monitor every single act of the passengers. Nevertheless, the police should be the first to arrive at the scene when they have been requested, especially now when there are unmanned station concourses and driverless trains
Station staff and the Train Captain were unlikely to be aware of the possible background of the attackers or the organisations they potentially associate with; not to mention the fact that even journalists and paramedics had also been hit in the head
There have been no police officers patrolling, the police stations in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai were closed and the general public had even been advised by the 999 hotline operators to not leave their properties if they felt unsafe. Is it too much to ask for those who would like to go home after work, feeling safe?
(Note : ☎️ the 999 hotline is operated by Hong Kong Police, they would only refer calls to Fire Services Department when ambulance service is needed)
Apart from the steel door of the Station Control Room, no matter how well the staff practise self-defence or even martial art, we have to face the fact that the glasses at the platform booths and Customer Service Centres could easily be breached and that there is a lack of clarity on the insurance
We are here to ask the #MTR Corporation and Hong Kong Police seriously what measures they have to guarantee passengers' and staff safety. We support strike actions if they don't have any

Dan Lok Demonstrates a Jut Sao Drill. Jut Sao is a short sharp deflecting technique used in Jeet Kune Do to deal with punches. The elbow must be kept lower than the wrist in order for Jut Sao to work.

Watch the Previous Video that demonstrates the Lap Sao Techniques: https://youtu.be/ad17nEj_TBg
Jut Sao can be used to deflect punches off of the center line. It is useful for mid level to head high straight punches like a boxing jab. It can also through an opponent off balance if they are tense during or after punching. A common mistake when using Jut Sau is to lift the elbow meaning the attack slides under the practitioner's defense
Trapping is not exclusive to JKD, but it certainly isn’t very common in most martial arts.
In case you aren’t familiar with what I’m talking about, trapping is the art of using your arms to nullify one of your opponent’s limbs so that he can’t use it to hit or to block. This allows you to then strike into that open line (that’s a general definition). It’s also called Hand Immobilization Attack (although you can also immobilize other parts of the body, too, using the same concept).
In short, trapping basically means “grabbing to hit”.
One of Dan Lok’s passions in life is martial arts. Like many young kids, after watching a Bruce Lee movie, it changed his life forever. At 17 years old, Dan started training in martial arts seriously because he was being bullied in school. It wasn’t long for Dan to learn the techniques he needed, and gain the confidence necessary to defend himself.
Dan has studied with legendary martial artist such as Bruce Lee’s original student Ted Wong (http://tedwongjkd.net) and Joe Lewis “The Worlds Greatest Fighter” (http://joelewisassociation.com), making him a second generation student of Bruce Lee - in Bruce Lee's authentic art of Jeet Kune Do (JKD). He's also a third generation student of Ip Man (Wing Chun Kung Fu).
Dan has also trained with other great instructors like Sifu Adam Chan (https://www.pragmaticmartialarts.com), Canadian lightweight boxing champion Tony "Fire Kid" Pep (https://www.facebook.com/pepboxing), and Octavio Quintero (https://www.theartofjkd.com)
For Dan, martial arts training permeates every area of life. It’s not a hobby, it’s a way of life, and it influences how he does business.
Martial arts gave him the confidence, focus, and patience to push through these obstacles and to keep fighting when he felt like giving up.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dan is NOT a full-time martial artist and he doesn't even claim to be that good of a fighter.
He's simply a successful businessman who enjoys the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee, just like you.
He doesn't have any online martial art videos, seminars or expensive "private training" to sell you. Quite frankly, he doesn't need the money.
He simply wants to share his passion for the art of JKD (his own version of Jeet Kune Do) through his YouTube channel.

What is Pak Sao in Bruce Lee's JKD? Translated, pak sao means "slapping hand". However, pak doesn't really slap, at all. In reality, the technique of pak sao involves a great deal of information learned by close attention to details. Be sure, pak and slap do not share the same energies, nor even the same results. You may execute a slap, but not Bruce.
His was pak! Nevertheless, pak sao has still another meaning in wing chun. It's in the nature of the meaning whereby Bruce spoke when he defined Jeet Kune Do as, "pak sao and hip". Pak sao's nature is to intercept.
Thus, the name Jeet Kune Do, The Way of the Intercepting Fist. Actually, there are only three ways to intercept. Ahead of the opponent's beat, at the same time as his beat, or behind his beat. We call this a half-beat ahead, same beat, or half- beat behind.

With Pak Sao, the hand comes directly out of the center of the body to slap away an attacker's strike to one's head. Effective application of Pak Sao involves creating an angle of deflection through which the opponent's blow can be slapped away with minimal effort.
