It was the end of an era as Hong Kong’s largest pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily printed its final edition on June 24, in a blow to media freedom in the city.
Staff reportedly wept as they scrambled to put together the last paper, and waved emotional goodbyes to hundreds of supporters illuminating mobile phone flashlights outside of their office.
Residents queued around building blocks to snag a copy for themselves, where the paper’s last headline had read: ‘Hong Kongers bid a painful farewell in the rain: We support Apple Daily’.
The tabloid’s closure comes days after its offices were raided over allegations that several reports had breached a controversial national security law. Police had detained the chief editor and four other executives, and company-linked assets were frozen.
