Today marks the day of the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
History class of WWII to me was mainly about the Nazi and the Holocaust.
My grandparents didn't want to share the in depth details of the Asia Pacific side of the war and their experiences.
Finally, I read the only book in English which had every single detail:
The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang. I had to stop many times, I cried a lot. This was my first step towards learning about the Asia Pacific side of WWII. I feel every Chinese person should read this book at one point in his life; know your own history and never forget those who suffered and those who sacrificed and tried to protect. History will not be forgotten and something like this should never ever be repeated.
To this day, Japanese government, has not admitted nor apologized for the crimes and atrocities by their forefathers during WWII. The leaders of the imperial army were never prosecuted and are still being praised in a shrine. Government officials pay respect to these war criminals yearly.
