Ever wanted to be able to bust out perfect Chinese when ordering at a Chinese restaurant, like I do on my popular YouTube channel Xiaomanyc? To amaze the nail salon ladies with your fluent Mandarin? To finally be able to talk to your Chinese relatives...in Chinese?!
When I first began learning Chinese over a decade ago, I felt SO CONFUSED by teaching material that was totally irrelevant for beginners. My teachers would try to explain minute details about the writing system that didn't make any sense, because I didn't have any idea how the language actually worked!
But unfortunately, because of the myth that "Chinese has no grammar", it too often gets taught directly from the written language in a way that overlooks how the language is actually used. This is made worse by the fact that native speakers sometimes try to teach Chinese how THEY learned Chinese in school -- characters first! -- which doesn't make any sense for us because when they were learning Chinese, they were *already* fluent in the language!
My course will not be like that. Whereas most Chinese courses bore you with endless drills and character memorization, we will be starting with sentences from Day 1, just like how a child would learn. Which is not only way more effective but also way more fun! It's exactly how I would have wanted to learn Chinese myself if I could start all over again, and it's exactly how I go about learning new languages these days.
So I will be compressing my 10+ years of experience learning and teaching Chinese into a 10-week, live Zoom course. I will be teaching conversational Mandarin, as spoken by over 1 billion people around the world, along with lots of fun cultural tidbits along the way and hopefully some guest speakers as well. We'll be doing one 90-minute course per week, along with virtual "office hours" with me scheduled at another point during the week where we can chat about how your learning is going and you can field me with any questions you have.
If you're interested please check out my course website here: https://www.xiaomanyc.com/! Looking forward to meeting you!

PART 02 - Tai-FUN - Fun times in Tainan! - a bunch of fun places to experience Tainan
I love good food, but between meals it’s not a bad idea to do something else to spend your time. Today I will introduce you to a few very interesting places that you can experience, learn and spend quality time. Are you ready? Let’s go!
(Dachu Coffee Estate)
If you know me, you know I love coffee. I drink 3 cups of coffee per day. The moment I found out I am going to visit a real coffee plantation I was so thrilled. And, I was right. The place is Dongshan in the beautiful mountains of Tainan. Once you arrive you are surrounded by coffee trees. What can you do here? Of course drink some delicious, fresh coffee. But also there are other things to do: you can learn about coffee planting, processing and roasting methods. What’s more - the owner took us on a ride to the top of the hill where his field is, and the view was truly breath-taking. I took some photos so you can see it but nothing could beat the experience of seeing it with your own eyes. Plus, well, I am not sure if you know ( I didn’t know that before) you can eat coffee straight from the tree there. How interesting! They also serve hot pot and other dishes. It is a place where you can escape from the city with your family and friends.
(Chimei Happiness Factory
Chimei is a well-known Taiwanese food supplier. Going to their museum is quite an experience. I think lots of kids would love to learn how to make traditional Taiwanese foods (such as dumplings or steamed buns). You can also play some interactive games and learn about food safety. But the real highlight is the DIY Pineapple Cake Baking experience - yes, you can make a famous pineapple cake with your own hands, and later take a box home! (that’s not included in the normal ticket). Apart from those two, you can find a coffee shop, bakery, restaurant, and a whole lot of Chimei foods ready to take with you (pineapple cakes, frozen buns and so on). I am sure if you come with younger ones you will have a great visit.
(Tainan Silver Jewelry & Accessories Workshop)
Taiwan has a long and rich tradition of silver making. I found it really thrilling when the art of making jewelry is mixed with Chinese traditions and beliefs - dragons, buddha and tao symbols, and way more. Lots of them seem to be quite a good investment because they are meant to help you make more money :) Besides, The owner is a really interesting and passionate person who will happily explain to you about the silver making process. They also provide repair and cleaning services.
If you are an animal lover, you should definitely check it out. It’s a full service place for your pets (even if you don’t have one - you can adopt one right on the spot). The place offers an animal swimming pool, showers, hotels and a wide variety of animal products and snacks. And the puppies and cats there - please be careful - they may melt your heart in a split second!
Feel free to ask any questions that you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan before or recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

Saravanaa Bhavan
KL │ How to order delicious vegan Indian cuisine
Saravanaa Bhavan is a multinational South Indian vegetarian restaurant that I have been to once in HK, this time I'm going to try the one in KL.
I always don't know how to order Indian food, I think many of you may suffer the same situation. Today I am going to share how to order delicious vegan Indian cuisine with limited English.
1. First explain that you don't eat egg & milk. Many curries are pre-made and it is difficult to take out milk at the spot, so be clear to the staff, my excuse is: I am allergy/sensitive to milk, my body will be uncomfortable, I may need to go to hospital after eating milk 🤣 Well, I do feel a little uncomfortable when I eat milk.
2. In addition to let the staff directly introduce you the dishes, you can act like a friend and chat with him, ask him which dish he likes the most, and then check with him if there is milk.
3. Before deciding to order, I usually look at the staff again and ask cutely: Are you sure I will like this dish? After he said yes, I will say: Good! I believe you! (with a big smile) 🤣
SEE! look at my dishes, my travel companions and I were very satisfied with the meal, although I don't know much about what I ate, but it is delicious! I especially like the triangular Dosa, with potato mash inside, it's slightly spicy, but still good! The curry is not spicy, eat with the rice and Roti please! Even the green mint-flavored drink is recommended by the staff. He said it is his favorite. It tastes good!
I felt really happy with the meal, so at this moment, I would look at the staff and put my thumbs up. The staff even came over and chat with us a bit. Everyone was very happy, nice~
the above is just my own experience, feel free to share yours with me~

You can call me illy. I am a mom, a wife who works full-time in e-com while trying her best to create as many beautiful memories in life. Nothing makes me happier than enjoying a good meal by the beach with my 2 daughters (Sofea & Zandria) and my husband, right after a spa session LOL
My husband (Johan) and I work very hard to fund our love of traveling and experiencing new taste at places we have never been to. We like to share our experience with like-minded people on the internet. Like you.
Our blog revolved around our life. Yes, I decided to call this blog ours, because my family is an important part of my blog.
You may bump into parenting topics, the beauty product that I tried, new recipe by my husband (he have a passion for food and car!) hotel we stayed at, kitchen appliances up to where we got our curtains hahaha…
Hope you enjoy some light reading and a sneak peek into our humble life.
