【A Night in Baltimore with Kenny Barron & Regina Carter】
Last night I went with my friend to this new club in Baltimore, called Keystone Korner, to see Kenny Barron and Regina Carter! Man, 14 years since I graduated from Johns Hopkins!! Haven’t been back since then... Can’t believe it! Some parts didn’t change a bit, but some new parts are really happening! Feeling nostalgic... and enjoyed two great sets by jazz piano maestro Kenny Barron and probably the greatest jazz violinist Regina Carter! Mr Barron was smoking hot last night, and I showed him the picture we took 2 years ago at the Ron Carter 80th birthday show at Blue Note, and he was very happy... talked about his music, and my admiration for his work with Sphere, and he gave me Monk’s “Shuffle Boil” back in the second set! Finally met Regina Carter in person, and got to talk to her a bit too! What a humble soul... Although I look like a giant next to her, she is the real musical giant! I have been a fan ever since the first time I heard her on record! Also get to know a new friend Kiyoshi Kitagawa, long-time bassist for Kenny Barron. Love his guitar-playing-like approach to the double bass! Kiyoshi did mention about you, Teriver! The sets also included Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints,” Billie Holiday’s “Don’t Explain,” Gershwin’s “Lady be Good,” Barron’s own “Cook’s Bay” and other classics and lesser known numbers. Another unforgettable night of my life! And do support Keystone Korner in Baltimore!
