Post workout nutrition- Should you consume carbs after exercise?
This topic is always the most controversial when it comes to losing weight or fat loss.Surely you don't want to consume extra calories after you have worked so hard to burn them off??
Unfortunately, that is far from the truth, to put it into the simplest term, your body's ability to utilise these nutrient are at its peak after training, not providing the necessary nutrient in your post workout meal will only hinder your body's ability to recover from your training session. If your goal is to optimise performance, preserving or building muscle , it makes no sense to avoid PWO carbs
As long as you are in a caloric deficit, post workout carbohydrate consumption will NOT hinder your fat loss, and on the flip side, if you are in a caloric surplus but choose not to place carbs post workout, you WILL still gain weight!
I personally have had the same post workout meal throughout my entire prep and the portion size has only been adjusted once and it was a very moderate decrease, and yet I have lost over 40lbs in this 14 weeks period as my caloric deficit was deepen from other meals , and also increase in caloric output via cardio and training:)
So what should I eat?? It makes greater sense to consume a combination of high protein(for protein synthesis), high carbs (shuttling glycogen into your muscles) and low fat meal in your post workout window as fat will only slow down your absorption rate of glycogen.
keeping your PWO meal with a source of low fat protein such as fish, chicken or turkey alongside with your favourite low fat carbohydrate source, be it pasta, low fat cereal or pop tart, or fruits:) as long as it fits your goals I personally find no difference in the choice of carbs:)
