中國最早的拼音系統是由英國外交家兼漢學家威妥瑪（Sir Thomas Francis Wade）在1859年建立，其後由另一位英國人Herbert Giles作改良。這套Wade-Giles羅馬拼音系統一直流行於各英文書刊，直至1979年為止；其另一主要用途是幫助外國人學習中文。此外，亦有其他拼音系統如Sin Wenz（拉丁化新文字）、Postal Map和Yale Romanization等，又由於中文擁有眾多「方言」（對不起，我無意爭拗方言的定義），所以滬、粵、閩南及客家等方言，亦擁有各自的多種拼音系統。
整體來說，初期的拼音系統非常混亂和複雜，並不統一和標準化，單從香港人出世紙和身份證上的混亂英文拼音名字，即可見一斑。如姓李的可譯為Lee或Li，名字「玲」可譯為ling或ning等。

1924 年版本的經典懷舊倫敦木製電話亭，皇冠大小，字體背後沒反白，手把好多細節都跟現在不同，想當年沒手機打回台灣都要躲裡面看著電話卡儲值被秒殺，雖然不再懷念，但有木製版本幫我們保留在倫敦的皇家藝術學院真好。
[1924 Very first series of London Telephone Box was made by Wood ?! ] This red classic telephone box - K2 " designed by architect Giles Gibert Scott ( also build Battersea power station, outlook of Tate modern ) base on another great architect- Sir John Soane's memorial, and it is made of wood.
