These three floating restaurants on Aberdeen Harbour were once so popular among tourists that had even hosted Queen Elizabeth, Tom Cruise and many more celebrities.
Aberdeen is the home to fishermen in Hong Kong. In earlier times, floating restaurants were run by the fishing community - Tanka people that served seafood dishes. These restaurants were also where Tanka people hold birthday and wedding banquets. And soon, they became a popular spot among tourists.
These very Hong Kong restaurants were also featured in many movies 🍿 - Bruce Lee’s movie - Enter the Dragon, James Bond film - The Man with the Golden Gun and more! Have you noticed that?
It is a pity that all three had closed down, leaving the piers being abandoned in Aberdeen.
Have you been to any of the three floating restaurants?

Who says there’s nothing to explore in early morning?
These gate graffiti tell you the story of different old shops, which you can easily spot them…. only after the shops are closed. That means either at night or in early morning! (Definitely a better time to take photos in the morning!)
Where can you find them? We saw them in Sham Shui Po, Wan Chai and this one in Ap Lei Chau! They are everywhere! Usually the gate of old shops in Ho Kong.
Where is this?

Probably the only Sampan in Hong Kong that sells noodles - 流記艇仔粉 🍜
Aberdeen is the home to many fishermen, this is where you can still find these “floating restaurants” for the fishing community, who spends most of their time on the water.
Having a bowl of 艇仔粉rice noodle from the sampan is definitely a must-do when you visit Aberdeen/Ap Lei Chau 香港仔/鴨脷洲. This bowl of 艇仔粉rice noodle with roasted duck 燒鴨, barbecue pork 叉燒and fishballs 魚蛋costs HKD$30. Does the number of ingredients affect the price? No! That’s why the boat people recommended us to order all 3 ingredients!
This is our tip - When you arrive at Ap Lei Chau/ Aberdeen, call the boat people at 9140 2628 and check whether the restaurant has opened and where is he now. We met him at Ap Lei Chau Ferry Pier 鴨脷洲街渡碼頭, which is near to Lei Tung MTR station 利東站, exit A1. (I called the boat people for 3 times to confirm the place, he was very patient to help us to find the way 🙈☺️)
It is not where you find good rice noodles, but this is definitely a fun experience and a part of Hong Kong culture and history, which should be preserved.
