A friend wrote this for her Christian friends, but I feel like this is helpful for everyone. So, I'm going to share it without naming her.
This post is intended for my friends, particularly ones who attend church.
If you are worried your church is making people feel unsafe by opening up too soon, ask the leadership questions! Many questions. Here are some ideas:
-What did you read when you were making this decision? Who did you consult? How many public health professionals did you talk to or read? How many people of color (given that they are disproportionately impacted by the virus) were in the room when the decision was made? Who are you listening to, who are you worried about offending? How many people in high risk groups were part of the decision making? What if the church just waited a few more weeks to check the trends?
-Will there be some kind of screening or testing? Will there be singing? Will there be face-to-face activity? Are masks required, not just encouraged? Will people be touching the same surfaces?
-How are you changing the building to make sure the air if flowing right? Are you opening windows? How exactly are you going to enforce social distancing?
-If the church doors open up, does that mean younger people will be in a building while the church asks older members to stay home? What does that communicate about who is valued? Is this "invite only"?
-How is your church caring for orphans and widows, especially during this time? What about your policies make them feel welcome or unwelcome? Did you consult your neighbors to see how they would feel about this? How exactly is the church caring for the poor, sick, weak, aged, vulnerable during this time?
These are some ideas. What are the questions you've asked your church leadership? Asking questions can be a one step toward loving your neighbor.

A spirit of power and love and sound mind is completely wrapped up in loving our neighbor as ourselves. There is nothing fearful about that.
