Nếu bạn là newbie toàn tập, hoặc đang ôn luyện trong tình trạng quay cuồng trong mơ hồ thì mình xin gợi ý lộ trình 5 bước học và thi IELTS như sau:

1/ TẠI SAO THI IELTS?
Mọi việc đều cần phải “Start with WHY”. Bạn cần bằng IELTS để đi du học, để apply học bổng, để được cộng điểm ưu tiên vào cấp 3/Đại học, vì công việc… Một cái WHY đủ lớn sẽ giúp bạn có động lực để vượt qua thử thách và đạt được điểm số bạn mong muốn.

Ngược lại, một cái WHY be bé và nhất thời như kiểu hâm mộ anh này chị kia, học theo phong trào, hoặc xuôi theo “lời đường mật” của các trung tâm Anh ngữ mà đăng ký đại một khóa học… khả năng cao sẽ chẳng đưa bạn đến đâu. Hãy tìm hiểu và suy nghĩ thật kỹ trước khi quyết định dành thời gian, công sức và tiền bạc cho IELTS, bằng cách trả lời những câu hỏi sau:

- IELTS là gì? Bằng IELTS có giá trị như thế nào, trong ngắn hạn và dài hạn?
- Mục tiêu lớn của bạn là gì? IELTS có phục vụ mục tiêu đó không? (Ví dụ: Cái đích cuối cùng là du học bậc Đại học ở Đức, thì có lẽ bạn cần thi bằng B1 tiếng Đức, chứ không phải bằng IELTS)
- IELTS có phải công cụ tối ưu để đạt mục tiêu không, xét theo chi phí và độ “khoai”? (Ví dụ: TOEFL cũng là một chứng chỉ ngoại ngữ phổ biến, lệ phí thi thấp hơn, một số bạn đánh giá TOEFL dễ hơn, vậy tại sao lại thi IELTS mà không phải TOEFL?)

Chốt đơn IELTS rồi, quyết tâm hừng hực rồi mới được nhảy qua bước tiếp theo nhé.

2/ XÁC ĐỊNH MỤC TIÊU SMART
Vẫn là công thức SMART quen thuộc, mình đã từng share rồi:

- SPECIFIC - Cụ thể: Điểm overall bao nhiêu? Điểm thành phần mỗi skill bao nhiêu?

- MEASURABLE - Đo lường được: Điểm số chính là thang đo. Ngoài ra, bạn còn có thể đo lường theo thời gian/số lượng để kiểm soát tiến độ trong quá trình ôn tập, ví dụ: cày 3 full test Listening/tuần, dành 30 phút học từ vựng mỗi sáng, luyện Speaking trong khung giờ 20h-21h.

- ATTAINABLE/ACHIEVABLE - Khả thi, Có thể thực hiện được: đừng đặt mục tiêu “đạt 8.0 IELTS” nếu như xuất phát điểm hiện tại của bạn là mất gốc tiếng Anh. Ý mình không phải là bạn chắc chắn sẽ không đạt được mục tiêu đó, nhưng nó đang “quá tham vọng” so với trình độ, khả năng hiện tại của bạn, và rất có thể sẽ khiến bạn bị ngợp, nản, và sớm bỏ cuộc. Thay vào đó, hãy đặt mục tiêu thực tế, nằm trong khả năng của mình, rồi nâng lên dần dần nhé.

- RELEVANT/REALISTIC - Có liên quan, thực tế: Xét tất cả các yếu tố ngoại lực có ảnh hưởng tới việc học và thi IELTS của bạn. Nếu bạn là học sinh đang nghỉ hè, có nhiều thời gian rảnh thì có thể đặt mục tiêu “tăng 2.0 band trong vòng 2 tháng hè”, nhưng nếu bạn là sinh viên vừa lo chạy assignment, vừa đi intern thì mục tiêu này có lẽ hơi quá sức.

- TIME-BOUND - Có thời hạn: nếu mục tiêu của bạn chỉ dừng lại ở “đạt IELTS 7.5” mà không có deadline nào cả, thì không biết tới bao giờ mới đạt đâu, bạn sẽ liên tục trì hoãn (because it’s human nature=))). “Đạt IELTS 7.5 trong vòng 3 tháng” sẽ là một mục tiêu hiệu quả hơn nhiều, và bạn phải cam kết hoàn thành trước thời hạn nếu không muốn chịu hình phạt nào đó (tự chọn hình phạt nghiêm khắc vào nha). Ai máu chiến thì chọn ngày thi và nộp xèng luôn, từ giờ tới đó còn chừng này thời gian, trả 5 củ cho combo 2 bút chì 1 tẩy hay một tấm bằng xịn xò đẳng cấp quốc tế hoàn toàn do bạn quyết.

3/ BIẾT MÌNH ĐANG Ở ĐÂU
Bước này rất ez, thi thử là xong.
Bạn có thể thi thử online trên các trang web miễn phí: IELTS Online Tests, IELTS Exam, Mini IELTS và IELTS Buddy.

Nhưng mình khuyên các bạn thi thử offline ở ZIM nhé, lệ phí có chút xíu mà trải nghiệm gần với thi thật lắm luôn, còn được feedback Writing và Speaking tại chỗ nếu bạn có nhu cầu nữa. Link đăng ký: https://zim.vn/ielts/thi-thu-ielts-de-thi-ielts-chuan-tu-examiners

4/ ĐỌC BAND DESCRIPTORS
Okay đặt mục tiêu và thi thử xong có mấy con số lù lù ở đó rồi, nhưng mấy số đó có nghĩa là gì?

- Với Writing và Speaking:
Đầu tiên, đọc Band Descriptors cho band score hiện tại của mình (điểm thi thử), viết ra các điểm mạnh, điểm yếu của mình trong từng kỹ năng và từng tiêu chí chấm, hiểu rõ tại sao mình lại đạt band đó mà không phải band thấp/cao hơn.

Sau đó, đọc Band Descriptors cho band score mục tiêu (vừa xác định trong bước 2), nắm được tiêu chuẩn của mức điểm đó, rồi so sánh với với profile của mình hiện tại xem cần cải thiện điều gì. Có thể xem thêm các video sample trên Youtube để hình dung rõ hơn (tra từ khóa “IELTS Speaking Band 8 Sample”, “IELTS Speaking Band 8 Score Explained”). Đó, ôn sao thì ôn, cứ perform như vậy là đạt target nha 😀

- Với Listening và Reading thì đọc cái bảng 2 cột, dò xem để đạt band score mục tiêu thì phải làm đúng bao nhiêu trên 40 câu.

5/ LÊN KẾ HOẠCH VÀ KIỂM SOÁT TIẾN ĐỘ
Từng ngày, từng tuần, từng tháng bạn cần làm gì để hoàn thành mục tiêu đúng hạn.

Một từ khóa rất quan trọng trong việc lập kế hoạch mình mới học được từ anh sếp là “Phasing” - chia giai đoạn. Ví dụ: bạn muốn tăng 2.0 band trong 2 tháng, có thể chia ra thành 2 phase: tháng đầu tăng 1 điểm, tháng sau tăng 1 điểm nữa, hoặc chia thành 4 phase: cứ 2 tuần lại tăng 0.5 band. Kết thúc mỗi phase bạn thi thử 1 lần.

Tại sao cần chia nhỏ mục tiêu lớn thành các giai đoạn nhỏ hơn? Để dễ dàng kiểm soát và chỉnh sửa. Sau 2 tuần, điểm số có cải thiện đúng tiến độ không? Nếu có thì yên tâm học tiếp, còn nếu không thì cần phân tích các yếu tố liên quan (phương pháp, thời gian, cường độ, học liệu…) để xác định và kịp thời giải quyết vấn đề. Chứ cứ lao vào ôn rồi đùng cái đi thi thật trong thấp thỏm lo âu là bạn đã bỏ lỡ rất nhiều cơ hội để ôn tập hiệu quả hơn và đạt điểm số tốt nhất trong khả năng của mình rồi đấy.

Cuối cùng, mình có hai điều nho nhỏ muốn nhắn nhủ với mọi người:

1) Mình học chuyên Anh, ôn trong Đội tuyển Quốc gia của Chuyên Ngữ 2 năm, nên mình có nền tảng và xuất phát điểm tốt để đạt điểm IELTS cao, vậy nên không cần so sánh với mình rồi tự áp lực quá, cứ xác định rõ ràng mọi thứ rồi kiên định với lộ trình của mình là được.

2) Mục tiêu của việc học tiếng Anh không phải là để thi IELTS. Đừng chỉ học mẹo, học thủ thuật, học thuộc, học vẹt, lao đầu vào luyện đề. Hãy học thực chất, học để ứng dụng. Khi đã giỏi tiếng Anh rồi thì điểm gì cũng cao thôi.
