Spent a lazy Sunday morning ride in town with the usual suspects yesterday.
One interesting topic that caught my interest this week was about the influx of new cyclist and their recent behaviour towards basic cycling rules and ethics..
cycling in big groups and taking up the whole lane on a busy street rather than a single file..
hoarding free commercial parking spaces and road side curbs in residential areas for hours as they go out cycling..
not using hand signals and the right safety measures when on the road endangering their lives and the lives of other road users .. etc ..
I’ve been a part of the cycling community for the past 7,8 years now and I admit I enjoy cycling out in big groups for fun rides into town or just to find new hidden gems.. but one thing I learned from all my Abang Abangs and Kakak Kakak cyclist is that when we are out there having fun, we should always remember the courtesy to think about other road users and always be considered .You r not the only user on these roads. The roads don’t spell out your father, mother name.
We complain about road bullying towards cyclist. But now i feel that many so often we call upon it ourselves. We are starting to pain an ugly name for cyclist and we are starting to be annoying ..
You see not everyone looks at cycling as a status symbol or a cool hobby like golf. Many of us use our bicycles to commute, there are also those whose living depends on this 2 wheels.
But if we continue to ignore all these basic cycling rules and ethics , soon more stringent rules and laws will be imposed on us. I even fear that we will only be allowed to cycle in certain areas or even worst this rights, freedom and love towards cycling be taken away from us.
I urge all season cyclist to recall these ethics .
I urge the new ones to look up these safety rules before you hit the road.
Be mindful, be considerate, please be smart and use our brains..
