I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.
•a middle-class life 中產階級生活
•set things up 打點一切
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Unfortunately, half a year after we arrived, he left us. That was a huge shock. Our transition had already been quite difficult, as we both didn't speak English. Also, as Shanghai was such a big bustling city, Sydney felt a bit like the countryside, especially on the weekends, as no shops were open back then!
•shock 令人震驚的事件(或經歷);驚愕,震驚 (come as a great shock 讓人倍感震驚)
•a bustling city 繁華都會
★★★★★★★★★★★★
We were very much reliant on my dad, not only financially, but also as a conduit into the wider community. So to have that broken was quite distressing. I remember Mum crying a lot. As we had become socially isolated, we didn’t find out anything about Centrelink, so we survived on her savings for a while, and then got some help from her family back in China.
•be reliant on…
•a conduit into 進入...
•distressing (adj.)
•survive on her savings
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Eventually, Mum moved us down to Melbourne, where we were able to make some new networks and family friendships. But I was bullied a bit at school about things like my food and clothing! Whenever someone bullied me, I would defend myself, but because I didn’t have the language skills to explain to the teacher why, I got in trouble quite a bit. I ended up having to move school 3 times before I came to Balwyn Primary School, which was relatively multicultural.
•be able to 能夠
•make new networks 建立新的人脈,關係網
•be bullied 被霸凌
•get in trouble 惹上麻煩
★★★★★★★★★★★★
After that, I did alright. Music featured very prominently in my life. I had started learning the violin from the age of 2.5 years old and even with all the troubles that were going on in my life, had somehow still kept up with it. As a result, I got a music scholarship to Trinity Grammar School. But even there I used to get into quite a lot of mischief, and would often skip school to go to the movies.
•feature (v.)
★★★★★★★★★★★★
By the end of year 11, I was told I would have to either repeat the year, or consider going to another school, which was quite humiliating for my mum. I decided to move school and surprisingly, I ended up doing quite well in year 12! As a result, I ended up getting into a double degree in Law and Music at Monash.
•repeat the year 留級 ; 重唸一年
★★★★★★★★★★★★
When I started, my first thought was that I didn’t belong because I had done so badly in school up to year 11 and everyone else seemed so smart. But I put my head down, got through it, and ended up getting a job in the legal department of a major manufacturing company, which was a different approach to what most law students do.
•do not belong 不屬於這
•put my head down 埋頭苦幹
•the legal department of ...
•a different approach 不同途徑
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I really enjoyed it. It was hard work, but I learned a lot of foundational business, legal and corporate communication skills. After that I worked in corporate governance in RMIT, then started to moonlight as a lecturer in the Law Faculty. Eventually, they asked me if I wanted to do a PhD and I blindly said yes! I next worked at Swinburne University, and then was head-hunted to lead the corporate legal team at the Commercial Passenger Vehicles Commission.
•corporate governance
•moonlight (v.)
•headhunt (v.)

I had a good life, but after a while, I realised I wanted a different kind of job. I could see my seniors were making a lot of money but that their family life was not that good. And looking at my own upbringing, I wanted to be the kind of father who could be present in my own kids’ lives. So I decided on dentistry. It would not only allow me to use the hand skills that I had developed from playing the violin, but also the analytical and reasoning skills that I'd developed in law. Plus it would be flexible, and offer me a stable income and the chance to meet different people every day!
•analytical and reasoning skills
•offer a stable income
★★★★★★★★★★★★
My now fiancée, who was my girlfriend at the time, was also applying for further study, and coincidentally we both got into university in South Australia, so we moved to Adelaide together a few years ago.
•fiancée 未婚妻
•at the time 當時
•apply for 申請
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I was lucky to get a university job at Flinders University. Initially, I started out as a casual lecturer in the law school, but I’ve since transitioned into teaching health law and research, and I’m currently writing a few books on the intersection between law and medicine. And also, obviously, trying to finish my dentistry degree!
•start out as…
•transition into…
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Mum eventually retrained as a Chinese high school teacher, and she’s still teaching to this day. Like most first generation migrants, she struggled quite a lot, and invested heavily in my success. After we’re married, my fiancée and I are planning to have children, and I’m sure they will have it much easier than I did.
•to this day 至今
•have it much easier
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Still, a lot of the failures that I’ve had in my life have really informed a lot of my successes. Looking back, I wouldn't really want to change that to have a smoother life.
https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/inform
•have a smoother life 有一個更順遂的人生
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Over the years, I've learned that perseverance is very important. I hope that through telling my story, I can be an example to others who might be in a similar position as I was: to show that there's not just one road to the destination, but many roads. You just need to take the little step that’s right in front of you, and then the next one, and a few years down the track, they will seem like massive achievements.
•over the years 多年來
•be an example 成為榜樣
•be in a similar position
•down the road/line/track

About my shortsightedness. 👓
I asked on my insta-stories on how you guys started your ”SPECS JOURNEY”. Many of you all responded it was due to self own action.
& here’s how it happened for me:
I really thought wearing specs was cool. I then started wearing my friends’ spec in school since primary years. 👧🏻
& one day, I realized I can’t see the words on the blackboard anymore. It was blurred (as I wish), but somehow I freaked out. I didn’t know how to tell my parents. So I started sitting in front of the field staring at greens all day hoping it will gives my back my perfect vision. 🙏🏻🌳👀
Obviously, it didn’t happen. & my parents eventually found out (w/o knowing the real reason of my shortsightedness 🤭).
That’s how I started my “SPECS JOURNEY” at the age of of 11. It was initially fun, I get to choose my own specs’ color and design. I felt “cool”🤓
However, as I grew older. I started to hate how inconvenient it is. I even hated how I look in specs. But it was too late to change anything.🙃🙃🙃
Thank God for contact lenses. But again, I can’t be wearing it 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. I needed to take 1-2 days break a week from lens, and even just that annoyed me. Scroll left to see all the problems you might face wearing specs, that my dear followers shared me. ➡️
Long story short, I have been dying to have my perfect eyesight back, but.. lack of courage. Only when @shengyi’s sis, @jiaaaaaayiiiiii, came back from US and went for her lasik, she shared with me on how it is life changing, I then finally decided to make things happen. 💪🏻💫
I, went for a full eye check up in @vista.eye to see if I’m fit for lasik.
& yes, it is happening. 🥺♥️

Calm Your Inner Storm - Please Love Yourself To Say No To Suicide

If you kill yourself at age 30, when you should have lived till 70, what happens to the remaining 40 years?
I had contemplated suicide in the past, at least 100 times. During my primary school days, I felt my existance was redundant. When I grew up, there were many more reasons for suicide. Family, work, financial woes, relationships, etc. If I had jumped that one time, there will be no Lee Ji Qian today, to shoot over 80 videos for the tens of thousands of you to watch.
Ironically, for more than 10 years, I felt I was a useless person, with zero achievement.
Now, I see many comments telling me that I gave them positive energy.
The jab of energy which allows me to transform my negative energies and guided me out of the fog is the power of the Dharma.
My mother told me not to disclose publicly my past desire to kill myself. She said it was shameful for everyone to know, and I understand her good intention for me to maintain a positive image. In many countries, the suicide rate is increasing. More people of all ages are suffering from depression, and I would rather look bad in public and lend a helping hand to those in need through this video.
If you wish to take your own life today, please calm your inner storm, and listen to me, the one who had gone through the same path.

I've had a reverend in my local electorate say that the 'gay onslaught will start the day this bill is passed.'
So we are struggling to know what the gay onslaught will look like. We don't know if it will come down the Pakaranga highway as a series of troops or whether it will be a gas that flows the electorate and blocks us all in.
I also had a Catholic priest tell me that I was supporting an unnatural act.
I found that interesting coming from someone who has taken an oath of celibacy for his whole life. Celibacy... I haven't done it so I don't know what it's about.
I also had a leader tell me I would burn in the fires of hell for eternity and that was a bad mistake because I've got a degree in physics. I used the thermodynamic laws of physics.
I put in my body weight and my humidity and so on. I assumed the furnace to be at 5000 degrees and I will last for just on 2.1 seconds. It's hardly eternity. What do you think?
I also head some more disgusting claims about adoption. Well, I have got three fantastic adopted kids. I know how good adoption is, and I have found some of the claims just disgraceful.
I found some of the bullying tactics really evil. I gave up being scared of bullies when I was at primary school.
However, a huge amount of the opposition was from moderates, from people who were concerned, who were seriously worried, about what this bill might do to the fabric of our society.
I respect their concern. I respect their worry. They were worried about what it might do to their families and so on.
Let me repeat to them now that all we are doing with this bill is allowing two people who love each other to have that love recognised by way of marriage.
That is all we are doing. We are not declaring nuclear war on a foreign State. We are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agricultural sector forever.
We are allowing two people who love each other to have that recognised, and I cannot see what is wrong with that for neither love nor money.
I just cannot. I cannot understand why someone would be opposed. I understand why people do not like what it is that others do. That is fine. We are all in that category.
But
I give a promise to those people who are opposed to this bill right now. I give you a watertight guaranteed promise.
The sun will still rise tomorrow. Your teenage daughter will still argue back to you as if she knows everything.
Your mortgage will not grow. You will not have skin diseases or rashes or toads in your bed.
The world will just carry on.
So do not make this into a big deal.
This bill is fantastic for the people it affects, but for the rest of us, life will go on.
Finally, can I say that one of the messages I had was this bill was the cause of our drought.
Well, if any one you follow my Twitter account, you will see that in the Pakuranga electorate this morning, it was pouring with rain.
We had the most enormous big gay rainbow across my electorate. It has to be a sign. If you are a believer, it is certainly a sign.
Can I finish, for all those who are concerned about this, with a quote from the bible.
It is Deuteronomy. I thought Deuteronomy was a cat out of the musical 'Cats,' but never mind.
The quote is Deuteronomy 1:29.
'Be ye not afraid.'"
