On Tuesday, I joined PUAK Payong to observe and learn how they go about managing cases that are brought to their attention, in hope to be able to do it independently in the future and hopefully, in my own home state.
Case 3:
S A L I N A, Single mother 41 y/o
Husband passed away this year due to neck cancer. He was a labourer (pembina rumah) but due to his illness, Salina had to be the main breadwinner on top of looking after her husband.
She works in a school canteen earning RM20/day. She earns roughly RM600 a month. She’s worried as she has not paid for her house rent for 2 years.
Because she earns when school is open, she will seek jobs as a cleaner during the school break. “Tapi tak boleh jauh lah”
She has 5 children.
Eldest is 19 and he is studying at a polytechnic school.
Her youngest is 5 years old.
She gives RM30 to her eldest as his allowance for a week. He has a PTPTN loan, but that just covers his school fees and a bit of boarding.
RM10 of the RM30 is for his travels.
She owes RM4080 in rent arrears. Rent is RM170 a month — she was struggling after her husband was diagnosed with cancer.
We asked her if she can cook or sew.
She said “tak pandai sangat”.
“Saya boleh bersih sikit-sikit” , hence her saying she can do cleaning jobs while waiting for school to reopen.
Late husband and her are primary 6 school leavers.
There are holes in her house too, and she’s made use of an old aircon compressor as a house fan (the one on her ceiling is just for decor).
