I always have a good amount of passion for Japan, for its elegance in culture and the friendliness of most people (Never forget about the awesome cuisine!) So I have been spending over 3 months in Japan in 2010 as a WWOOFer, helping in organic farms in 2 locations and helping in a hostel in Kyushu.
Another amazing trip I have had in was it Tokyo, in 2012. As all of my possible travel companions were having a regular job, when I, was free & easy, I went to Tokyo by myself during Summer, after checking all kinds of news regarding the radioactivity caused by the Fukushima incident.
Despite these worrying concerns, I must say that, the Natsu Matsuri was one of the most fascinating festivals in Japan. You can see how natives celebrate/worship with/to Gods and Ancestors to bring good luck, by all kinds of activities such as dancing, singing, in lots of other forms.
Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri Festival
One of the craziest festivals is just like Songkran happening in Thailand every year, splashing water to the mikoshi (the shrine). Of course, it is one of the best way to cool down a little bit after lifting the heavy shrine in wood. As I searched online for the suitable remark on splashing, it is believed to be ”carrying shrines around the neighborhood brings happiness and prosperity to the local residents” & ”splashing being symbolic of purification, also helps to cool people off during the summer heat”.
It is just fun to watch the entire matsuri, and following the queue to get splashed!
