Taiwan's National Academy of Marine Research said Wednesday that its research team found a Hippocampus bargibanti, a type of pygmy #seahorse, in waters near the Penghu Islands in August, the first ever in that area.

📍 Mabul Island, Semporna
This is Hippocampus bargibanti. I took a photo of this species of the Pygmy seahorse in Mabul. It is tiny, probably a little over 1 centimetres in size.
Very little is known about the total number of pygmy seahorses, population trends, distribution, or major threats. It has therefore been classified as Data Deficient on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.
