🇭🇰Geoduck, which I prefer the other name Gooey-duck, is a bizarre marine creature that looks like an elephant trunk got stuck in a shell, but is super tasty and is at its best when it's prepared in sashimi, served with soya sauce and wasabi - totally Asian style. The meat itself is sweet with a hint of sea flavor, and somewhere between crispy and chewy - indeed a very unique kind of eating experience. We bought this from a fisherman/ live seafood boat shop in Saikung and then have it prepared in a restaurant.
.
Hong Kong is famous for its fresh seafood cuisine. HK has three sides surrounded by the sea but that isn't equivalent to having all the seafood that we can eat from our own waters. Gooey-duck clams in HK are mostly imported from Canada live, and due to the high demand in HK, it has become a super lucrative business for the gooey-duck farmers there.
.
Gooey-duck is the longest living species of clam, on average about 146years 😲According to marine biologists, the reasons are pretty simple:
.
First reason: they have very few predators. Only sea otters, dogfish, and starfish are strong enough to open and feed on the gigantic clams.
.
Second reason: they do not do much in order to survive, so their bodies do not have much wear and tear. The way a gooey-duck feeds is by siphoning plankton in, filtering out the food, and ejecting the waste. That's it~
.
Btw the cutie in the pic is my 6'4" American born Chinese foodie nephew. He's willing to eat absolutely ANYTHING.
