《從「武漢肺炎數學題」說起》
新聞報導，有補習社近日在facebook上載一條數學題目：「肺炎+漢肺炎+武漢肺炎=2001，問：武x漢x肺x炎=？」隨即惹來家長關注，直斥：「這個影響太壞了，對孩子引導太差」，又批評「未有正確使用病毒名稱」，令補習社要刪除題目、開除出題員工、校長降級，更要出道歉聲明。史丹福對此不以為然，並想在此談談我對病名的看法。
首先，我認同統一名稱在學術上是非常重要的。但史丹福認為，學術歸學術，民間自己又一套簡單易明的稱呼，又有何不可呢？如果我要寫一篇學術文章投稿學術期刊，我當然不可以用「武漢肺炎」這名稱。但在普羅大眾的一般溝通中，使用這個流行性高，大家都聽得懂的病名，又有何不可呢？難道要強迫每個人都叫COVID-19嗎？這未免太離地了。
舉些例子，瘋牛症的學名是非典型克雅二氏症（variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease），沙士的學名是嚴重急性呼吸系統綜合症（Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome），小兒麻痹症的學名是脊髓灰質炎（poliomyelitis），盲腸炎的學名是急性蘭尾炎（acute appendicitis）。大家覺得這是一般大眾溝通時可能用得到的名稱嗎...
