ROBOCOP (1987) was released today.
Let’s celebrate one of the best movies ever made.
“I’d buy that for a dollar!”
The screenplay had been offered to (and been rejected by) virtually every big director in Hollywood before Paul Verhoeven got hold of it. He threw it away after reading the first pages, convinced it was just a dumb action movie. However, his wife read it all the way through and convinced him that the story was layered with many satirical and allegorical elements, after which Verhoeven finally decided to direct the film.
The RoboCop suit was designed by Rob Bottin and his team. The production team wasn't satisfied with the initial design, and kept changing it and putting additions to it for months. Ultimately, nothing seemed to work and they went back to what was pretty much Bottin's original design. This caused considerable delays, and by the time the suit was completed, it was three weeks late and arrived at the studio on the day that the first RoboCop scene was scheduled to be shot. It took 11 hours for Bottin's people to fit Peter Weller into the suit, and when it was done Weller found that all his mime exercises were now useless because he needed time to get used to the suit and to perform as a robot in it. Production was halted so that Weller and his mime coach, Moni Yakim, could learn how to move in the suit. The suits were the most expensive items on set. While the price range varies, the producers indicated that they spent anywhere between US$500,000 to US$1 million for the suit.
A very unique part of this movie like other Paul Verhoeven movies is how he brings you more into the universe, news coverage and fake commercials are featured in the film all combined are over 5 minutes long. The world of future Detroit was actually shot in Dallas, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Los Angeles. The locations were all seamlessly woven together making it feel like one city by Production Designer William Sandell.
Because the hands of the ROBOCOP suit were made of foam rubber, the car keys would bounce off of Peter Weller's hand every time he attempted to catch them. The production took up to 50 takes and an entire day's worth of filming before finally getting the shot right.
Paul Verhoeven and Robocop suit creator Rob Bottin clashed repeatedly before and during production over the design and make-up of the RoboCop character. What they argued most about was the scene where Murphy takes off his helmet. Bottin wanted the scene to be filmed in a darkened area, fearing that harsh light would reveal too much of the make-up effects; Verhoeven wanted the scene to be filmed as brightly as possible, citing that director of photography Jost Vacano would be able to light it properly without revealing anything. Verhoeven got his way and Bottin refused to talk to him any further for the remainder of production. However, at the premiere, both men were so impressed with how the scene had turned out, that they instantly forgave each other. Bottin, who had even vowed to never again work with Verhoeven, happily accepted the offer to work on Verhoeven's next project, Total Recall (1990).
To Bring ED-209 designed by the great Craig Davis to life for some of the sequences Phil Tippet and Randal M. Dutra in my opinion did some of the best stop motion work ever done, I think what makes it so epic and memorable is yes it’s super smooth and almost seamless the way it cuts from stop motion to go motion but what’s truly special to me is the amount of character and humor they were able to provide for ED-209, this being the perfect example, the way ED-209 tries to navigate the stairs its almost toddler like, the sound editors even added a baby tantrum mixed with a pig sound effect as ED-209 tries to get up at the bottom of the stairs. stop motion animators Harry Walton and Tom St. Amand also helped make some beautiful work on this sequence.
Enforcement Droid 209's voice is that of producer Jon Davison, its growls are of a jaguar, and its squeals are of a pig. ED-209's body was based on the design of a Bell helicopter and the overall appearance is reminiscent of a line of toys named Robotech (1985) which were based on a 1980s Japanese anime series.
Peter Weller said one of his favorite memories of his film career was filming the drug bust sequence. While filming the sequence, Weller was listening to Peter Gabriel's song "Red Rain" on his Walkman inside the RoboCop helmet as he exchanged gunfire with various bad guys.
“Guns,Guns,Guns”
The shootout at the cocaine factory was not originally intended to be so fast-paced. The automatic guns used in the scene kept malfunctioning during filming. Most camera shots did not provide more than three seconds of usable footage, because most guns were usually jammed by that time. This necessitated quick cuts during editing, which proved to be advantageous for the scene.
RoboCop's first Directive, "Serve the public trust", was inspired by a fortune cookie.
The convenience store robber was played by the movie's stunt men who gladly accepted to be one of RoboCop's victims and contributed the idea of being hit into the door of the glass cooler.
The film was submitted to the MPAA 12 times before securing an R rating.
The script for Robocop was rejected by just about every major movie studio since it was conceived in the early 1980s. Orion films took the chance and Robocop's success continued on with 2 follow up sequels to the movie, two cartoon series, a television show, several comic book series, and a made for TV series of 4 movie length episodes as well as a fan made parody film. It has also spawned over a billion dollars in children and adult toy lines and collector statues which are still being released to date.
“Your move creep”
In Sacramento, California, a robbery suspect fled into a darkened movie theatre to escape pursuing police. He became so engrossed in the movie playing on screen (RoboCop), that he failed to notice that police had evacuated all other patrons from the theatre. When the lights flipped on, the stunned man was taken into custody.

My personal challenge this year is to visit every state I haven't spent time in before to learn about people's hopes and challenges, and how they're thinking about their work and communities.
After my early trips, people asked me what I was learning but I wanted to be careful not to generalize because every state is so different. I have a lot more to learn, but I'm starting to see some common threads.
My biggest takeaway so far is that our relationships shape us more than we think -- how we consider opportunities, how we process information, and how we form habits. There is a lot of discussion about inequality, but one under-looked dimension of inequality is in the makeup of our social networks.
There's a widely held myth that if people in other places just had better information they'd make better decisions. I've found this is generally wrong and the people I've met are rational. Now, it's true we're all missing some information that would help us make better decisions no matter where we live. But the people I've met have good reasons for the decisions they make based on their experiences and those of their friends and family.
The more fundamental issue seems to be the friends and family we surround ourselves with. This is a powerful force upstream of the information we receive and it determines how we process and factor it into our decisions.
I'll share three stories about how our relationships affect very different social problems.
First story: I was in Ohio and sat down with recovering heroin addicts. They told me the first step in fighting addiction is to detox, but the second is to get completely new friends. If you stay friends with the people you were using with -- or even with people who are using on their own -- you're almost guaranteed to relapse. It's tough when those people are your close friends and even tougher when they're your family, but building new relationships is the most important predictor of staying clean.
This isn't a matter of information. These recovering addicts all know heroin is bad for them and they know they shouldn't use it. But the people around you are a much stronger influence than information. So to move forward, we need to operate on the level of helping people build better relationships, not just getting them information.
Second story: I was in Indiana at a juvenile justice center. Some of the kids had committed serious crimes like murder or robbery, but others had just misbehaved in class. The most striking fact is that those kids are more likely to become criminals after going through detention than they were before they went in. The correctional system is building a negative and self-reinforcing social network.
Similar to the first story, these kids know crime is bad and they don't want to go to prison. But we all model our behavior on people around us. If we want to help them, we should help these kids build positive relationships with role models.
Third story: This one is about economic upward mobility. When I was driving through some depressed areas in the south, I was struck by how few people move to seek better opportunities elsewhere. It turns out there's good research showing how a lot of economic inequality comes from our lack of willingness or ability to move geographically. (See Raj Chetty's work here: equality-of-opportunity.org/neighborhoods)
From my conversations, a lot of people's decisions about whether to move depend on their friends and family in a couple of ways. First, if you grow up in a place where all your friends and family move away for college or to seek a job, then that sets an example for you. The reverse is also true, and if all your friends and family stay home, that sets a norm too. Second, and perhaps stronger, if all your friends and family move away for opportunities, there is less reason to stay where you grew up. On the other hand, if all your friends and family stay in the same place, there is a strong pull back home.
I've heard lots of stories of people who went away to college, but when they had kids they needed help, and since childcare is so expensive, they moved back home to be closer to their family. Coming home has great advantages, but if you don't have a diversity of friends and family who can expose you to different things, that may limit your ability to find opportunity.
I've seen lots of more stories like the three above that point to your friends and family as the most powerful force in shaping your path, including positive ones.
In Detroit, I met community leaders who turned an abandoned building into a safe place where kids can hang out after school. The founder told me: "We want kids to be able to think again, and that comes from seeing men and women who care about what they do. We've got whole neighborhoods of kids just waiting for someone to give them a sense of purpose."
This isn't a scientific study and it requires further research, but I think there's something to this idea that your relationships shape your path more than we realize.
I also think this is an area where Facebook can make a difference. Some of you have asked if this challenge means I'm running for public office. I'm not. I'm doing it to get a broader perspective to make sure we're best serving our community of almost 2 billion people at Facebook and doing the best work to promote equal opportunity at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
In many ways, relationships are the most important things in our lives -- whether we're trying to form healthy habits, stay out of trouble, or find better opportunities. And yet, research shows the average American has fewer than three close friends we can turn to for support.
Facebook has been focused on helping you connect with people you already know. We've built AI systems to recommend "People You May Know". But it might be just as important to also connect you with people you should know -- mentors and people outside your circle who care about you and can provide a new source of support and inspiration.
There are a number of models for how this might work. The Peace Corps creates service opportunities where people exchange culture and build new relationships. Perhaps we could build a new digital peace corps. Another model is Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, where people who have struggled with these challenges and overcome them go on to become mentors for others, with the hope of training them to one day become mentors themselves. This is something I've only recently started studying and working with our teams at Facebook to build.
One thing I've been inspired by is that if we can just help a few percent of people, that can make a huge positive impact on our society overall. On the unfortunate side, even though only a few percent of people are addicted to opioids, we all know someone affected by this. But that also means that if we can just help a few percent of people build new positive relationships, that will affect all of us as well. That gives me hope that we can do this.
My hope is that we can help more people build positive relationships with people who expand their sense of possibility. I believe that if we do this, we will make progress on a lot of our greatest opportunities and challenges.
I hope a lot of you have challenged yourselves to get out and learn from other perspectives this year too. I'd love to hear your stories and reflections as well.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is an action-adventure video game developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. A remake of the 2002 video game Mafia, it was announced in May 2020 and was released on September 25, 2020. The game is set within the fictional city of Lost Heaven (based on Chicago) in the 1930s, and follows the rise and fall of taxi driver-turned-mobster Tommy Angelo within the Salieri crime family. The game received favorable reviews from critics, with praise for revitalizing the story, performances, and graphics, although the dated action animations were criticized.
In 1930, during the ongoing Great Depression, impoverished taxi driver Thomas "Tommy" Angelo is strong-armed by two members of the Salieri family - Paulie Lombardo and Sam Trapani - into helping them escape an ambush by members of the Morello Family. While Tommy is compensated for his help, his actions lead him to losing his job when the Morello family target him in an act of revenge the following day. Seeking help from Don Ennio Salieri, Tommy agrees to be a part of his organisation, befriending Paulie and Sam, and becoming romantically involved with Sarah, the daughter of Salieri's bartender. The three men work together to contribute to Salieri's rackets, overseen by Salieri's consigliere Frank Colletti, including protection and bootlegging. In time, Tommy marries Sarah and begins a family with her, all the while working up in the ranks by impressing Salieri.
In 1933, Don Salieri becomes increasingly concerned when Don Marcu Morello begins putting pressure on him, ambushing their operations with bribed police officers and gaining the support of a corrupt prosecutor whose son has been killed by the Salieri family. Tommy finds himself forced to counter these attempts to prevent the organisation being financially weakened. When Salieri assigns him to eliminate an informant at a brothel, he is advised by Sam to spare them instead, allows them to escape in exchange for their silence, covering up his actions. When Frank disappears along with the organisation's account books, Tommy is instructed to locate both, and quickly learns that Morello planned to use the FBI to take down his rival. Convincing Frank to reveal where the books are, Tommy allows him to leave the country with his family, and covers up his actions once again.
In 1935, with prohibition ended and both Mafia families moving out into new rackets, Don Morello attempts to assassinate Salieri, whilst he and Tommy are dining at a restaurant. In retaliation, Salieri declares war and begins weakening Morello's position, damaging his rackets and reducing his influence on law enforcement. Eventually, Tommy works alongside Sam and Paulie to take down Morello, killing him by shooting down a plane he attempts to use to flee the city. By 1938, the Salieri family control the city's rackets, neutralizing anyone who attempts to stop them. Tommy, Sam and Paulie find themselves tasked with recovering a shipment of impounded cigars that had been smuggled into the city, informed that they hide a consignment of diamonds in them. Although the group manage to successfully recover the cargo, Tommy is shocked to discover that Salieri lied, and that the cigars concealed a consignment of drugs.
Disillusioned by the revelation, Tommy convinces Paulie to go ahead with a bank robbery that Sam had advised against. Although the pair manage to complete the job, Tommy finds Paulie murdered in his apartment the following day. When he goes for a meeting with Sam to discuss this, Tommy finds that his efforts to conceal his actions were uncovered by Salieri, and that Sam was ordered to execute him and Paulie for this and the bank job. Left with no choice, Tommy survives the attempt on his life and kills Sam upon learning that Frank and his family were murdered by Salieri's people. With his former allies against him, Tommy goes into hiding and contacts Detective Norman for help, providing his story of his actions. In exchange for testifying against the Salieri family, Tommy requests his help in protecting his family, which Norman agrees to out of respect for being a family man himself.
In 1951, Tommy and his family live under witness protection in Empire Bay, after Don Salieri and his organisation are arrested and tried for their crimes. A few days after his eldest daughter is married, in which he highlights how family is the most important value to a man, Tommy is visited by Vito Scaletta and Joe Barbaro, who murder him on behalf of Salieri, leaving him to die in his front yard. As his family surrounds him in shock, Tommy tells them all that they are now safe, before succumbing to his wounds.
