A champion on many levels, Muhammad Ali was born on this day in 1942. He was the boxing light-heavyweight gold medalist in the 1960 Olympics, and in 1964 won the world heavyweight boxing championship. Ali was stripped of his title in 1967 when he refused induction into the U.S. Army on religious grounds; the U.S. Supreme Court subsequently affirmed his right to object to military service based on those grounds. In the 1980s, Ali revealed he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and used his public stature to raise awareness of the disease. Ali died in 2016. (Photo courtesy Library of Congress)
