🎥Former President Lee Teng-hui’s promotion of democracy often angered China
Lee Teng-hui was a pioneer in the promotion of Taiwan's unofficial diplomacy. As a staunch supporter of sovereign democracy, Lee was seen as a public enemy in the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party. He made a historic speech at his alma mater Cornell University in 1995, becoming the first Taiwanese leader to set foot in the U.S. since Washington broke ties with Taiwan in 1979. He also oversaw Taiwan's first direct presidential election in 1996, which prompted China to lob missiles with dummy warheads in waters off Taiwan.

We are an independent country already and we call ourselves the Republic of China, Taiwan."
"We don't have a need to declare ourselves an independent state,"
"We are an independent country already and we call ourselves the Republic of China, Taiwan."
"We do have government, we have the military, and we have election."

Triumph in #Taiwan for incumbent President (and cat lover) Tsai Ing-Wen. 🗳🐱🇹🇼
She has won re-election. Her party has won a majority in the legislature. And she’s broken a record — winning the highest number of votes since Taiwan’s first direct presidential election in 1996.
Addressing the world's media just now in Taipei, President Tsai said: "Today, the Taiwanese people voted to keep the DPP in office and maintain our majority in the legislature. This result signifies that we have been moving in the right direction over the past 4 years."
President Tsai added: "The results of this election carry an added significance because they show when our democracy or sovereignty is threatened, #Taiwan people will show our determination even more loudly back."

Taiwan’s next referendum will soon vote on activating the nation’s fourth nuclear plant, as well as constructing a natural gas plant on an algal reef that's critical for Taiwan’s biodiversity. These decisions come as governments around the world are scrambling to meet the demands of the Paris Agreement, and as environmental activists fight for a more sustainable planet.
Green Parties propose an alternative voice in politics to tackle our environmental ruin. All over the world, there are 91 Green Parties that believe in committing our governments to environmental stewardship, through electing green movement leaders into office. In Asia, Taiwan is home to the region’s oldest Green Party, which won a National Assembly seat in 1996 - their very first election campaign.
