“If there is a law that needs to be amended, then do it. It’s not rocket science.” –– Little Baby Concern Group
“Medical staff were caring, I wish they can support the parents miscarried before 24 weeks too.” –– Enzo’s parents
“If I was able to bury Gloria, I could have brought my kids to the “Garden of Remembrance” and told them ‘This is your sister’. I think it is a very important process for mothers who suffered a miscarriage.” –– Gloria’s mum
“They deserve a place to rest in peace.” –– Teresa’s dad
These are the voice from the miscarriage parents. Their humble request shall be heard.
Over the last year, these parents had meetings with the Food and Health Bureau, Hospital Authority and FEHD co-organised by Fernando Cheung and myself. We are urging the government to amend the “Cremation and Gardens of Remembrance Regulation”(Cap 132M) in the coming legislative year. These amendments will enable parents to legally bury their children if miscarried before 24 weeks. In the coming months, we will arrange meetings with the Labour and Welfare Bureau to advocate for changes to the definition of “Miscarriage” in the “Employment Ordinance”(Cap 57), enabling women who miscarry from weeks 24-28 to have the maternity leave and pay that they are entitled to.
The right to honor dignity in the grieving process is fundamental across all civilizations. The medical sector, social workers, employers and society should go an extra mile to provide grieving parents with these fundamental rights.
