Reality TV Games Exclusive Interview with ANTM 16 Winner Brittani Kline
Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination phone call with America
Next Top Model 16 Winner Brittani Kline. Note: Stay tuned for Hannah,
Alexandria and (hopefully) Molly's interviews.
**************************************************
Where are you?
I am in Pennsylvania but I am leaving in about a half hour to go to New York.
(Where do you live?) I am currently living at home [in Pennsylvania] and I am
commuting back and forth, but I am moving to New York in July. (By yourself?)
I am moving in with Molly.
Do you know who will be shooting you for your second Vogue Italia editorial?
No I do not but I can tell you that the shoot will take place in Paris at the
beginning of June.
Anything coming up that you can share?
I know as much as you do I am going to meet with IMG tomorrow and I assume
that we are going to start talking about things then because I couldn't plan
anything while the show was airing - this is all just happening to me, so I
don't have any plans yet. (What would be ideal?) I just want to get in there
in time for the fall fashion week, runway is my favorite and I hope to start
doing runway shows, particularly Marc Jacobs but we'll see, I really hope...
(What are your interests when it comes to print?) I really want to keep
working with CoverGirl, I think that CoverGirl is great and I used their
products even before auditioning for the show and watching the show. I always
loved their make up and it is affordable and is good quality, so I really
want to keep working with CoverGirl.
How tall are you?
Five-ten and a half. (Ethnicity / nationality?) I am a very dirty mix of
German and Czechoslovakian. (Hometown?) Howard, Pennsylvania, actually I grew
up in Beech Creek. which is a couple of towns over. (Is Howard near a major
city or out in the middle of nowhere?) It is out in the middle of nowhere.
(Describe your family.) I live with my mom and stepdad... I am very close to
my family, all of my relatives live within ten minutes and I see them
[regularly]. (Are you an only child?) I have three half siblings and two step
siblings, but it has always been me and my mom so I was raised an only child.
How did you feel when you realized that none of your family would be
attending your final show?
I walked into the house and saw Molly's parents and I was like, "awesome, I
am so happy for her," because I knew she was missing them and I looked around
expecting to see my aunt because I knew that my mom would not be able to come
because of her anxiety and back surgery. I thought that they would have one
of my friends or my aunt come to support me, and once I did not see anybody I
felt like I was under a cloud because I had been away from home for two
months and in was stressful and unique situation and it would be good to have
somebody there. Not having that was really hard but I did video chat with my
mom and I am thankful for that; it was OK because in the end, being able to
do that without any kind of support there just made me stronger and it [and
other things that happened] taught me that I can be in a situation that is
not in my favor and overcome it.
That looked like a nasty fall that you took during the final runway show, did
you hit your head?
I twisted my ankle when I slid on the rose petals and that knocked me off
balance; I caught myself on the wall with my wrist to prevent my head from
getting hit and I have a scar to this day and it is going to be there. As
soon as it happened I was like, "I just lost this competition," because you
can't fall during a runway show and it be OK but luckily for me it was at the
end of it and not too many saw it.
Were you interested in modeling before Top Model?
I have been modeling since I was seven years old and I took a timeout and
didn't do any work throughout middle and high school. After I graduated I
started modeling again and after trying to model and do college at the same
time, I decided that I wanted to audition for the show and go for it 100%, so
I dropped out of college to model full time. (Did you drop out to model or
for show?) For the show. (Did you initiate the casting process?) Yes, I went
to the audition in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Did you actively work on your modeling skills?
All the work that I did was trade work for my portfolio and getting
experience... I walked in Philadelphia Fashion Week, I believe it was in 2009
so that was a really awesome and fun experience. All of the modeling that I
did up until Top Model I kinda view as preparation because it helped build my
confidence and I learned how to work in front of the camera and to develop my
own walk. Through my agencies I did have a couple of lessons on how to move
your face and angles and a couple runway lessons but then I was told that I
was doing it wrong (laughs), but I guess that's my signature walk, as Miss J
said.
How did you like living Los Angeles?
I liked LA, I liked the feel of it and I liked the views - it was beautiful
but I hated the traffic and I don't know if I can ever live there, I think
that it is because I am used to the east coast where I can get on the subway
or a train or something and just go and in LA you have to get on the 101 and
I'm just not a fan.
Who were your friends in the house?
I got along with everybody and I talked to everybody... I was closest to
Molly, Jaclyn, Hannah and Monique.
So where was your head after that infamous panel?
You are referring to the panel where I had my breakdown? (Yes.) When I ran
out I really could not breathe and I was concerned for my health and I know
that I needed to [take care of myself] and get water into me and after I left
I was like, "well we are going to see how this goes," and I went back out
there and when my picture came up... I knew that my shoot went a lot better
when I saw my picture. During deliberations I really assumed that I was going
home and I pretty much thought that it was over. (What was your state of mind
after you realized you were staying?) After Tyra said what she said to me and
I knew I was safe it was like an "I want to prove you wrong" thing because I
know who I am and I know my side of the story and I was there for the whole
thing. I just wanted to prove to everyone that they had a misunderstanding of
me and to prove that I can do it and that I did deserve to be there.
By now you've probably done several interviews, is there anything that you
would like to say regarding what happened at panel or the events leading up
to it?
I think that the topic has been discussed quite a lot, I have talked about it
almost every interview. I think that I was extremely misunderstood and
Alexandria was misunderstood, we have cleared things up and we talk to this
day... I don't regret what happened.
Was there anyone who you felt should have stayed longer or gone sooner?
I obviously felt that Monique should have stayed because I had my big blow up
after that, but the one person who I really think deserved to stay and it was
a huge mistake to send home was Jaclyn. I felt like she was just finding
herself and building her confidence and I started viewing her as competition.
I had kind of blown her off as the sweet girl, but not the girl who can win,
but as soon as she busted out that crazy for make up photo, that was awesome
and I think that she really could have gone far. She went to just as many go
sees as I did and I made it through and we both booked 100%, it is not our
fault that we are small town, silly girls who can't read a map. She was
getting so good and I was like, "wow Jaclyn is about to kick some butt," and
then they sent her home... they should have sent someone else home, I don't
know who but somebody else, something should have been switched.
How did you like your two makeovers?
I did not like both of my makeovers, I was not upset about the first one
because I went into Top Model expecting to get at least a little bit of my
hair cut off... I still have my second makeover, the pixie cut and I like it
a lot more than my first makeover, but it was a much more drastic change and
I was a little upset at first when I found out that they were cutting the
rest of my hair off.
What was your favorite and least favorite challenge?
My favorite challenge had to be the bubble challenge because I was really
proud of how well I did straight off the bat and it was a lot of fun. My
least favorite was The Insider challenge because [interviewing] is something
that I've never done before and it was really hard for me.
What few words pop in your mind about...
Jay Manuel - Very helpful and informative, he gave the best critique and best
advice and I really enjoyed working with him.
J Alexander - He is my absolute favorite, Miss J is amazing and he is an
inspiration and when I got to go out to dinner with him, it was really
touching, that was probably one of my favorite moments. I got to learn so
much and it was really cool.
Nigel Barker - Me and Nigel had a rough time but he is a great photographer
and I respect him very much.
Andre Leon Talley - Andre is absolutely fabulous, I would love to have tea
with him because, even though I did talk to him when I was in a group, he is
the only judge that I never got to talk with one on one.
Tyra Banks - Tyra is really beautiful and she was really nice to talk to. I
really enjoyed it whenever she came to the house, and we were able to talk to
her and open up to her. I also appreciate how she likes to give back and that
she has done so much for causes.
Erin Wasson - Working with Erin Wasson was amazing, she is really down to
earth and really beautiful, I did not expect to meet a supermodel and she was
so amazing to work with.
Who was your favorite photographer on the show?
I really enjoyed working with Pierpaolo Ferrari. He let me check the
photographs that we were working on as we were taking them and that is what I
like to do so that I can see what we like and what we don't like and how I
need to change to make a better photograph. We worked well together and I
hope that he is the photographer who does my Italian Vogue shoot in Paris
because it was a really good time and I think that we got great shots.
Who is your favorite fashion designer?
Marc Jacobs, of course... I have always been drawn to him since I was like
fifteen years old, that's when I first started looking at Vogue more often to
study fashion and models and photographers and I started to have a thing for
him.
Who are your favorite models?
My favorite model is Karlie Kloss, but I also like Gemma Ward and Miranda
Kerr.
Who are your favorite fashion photographers?
Steven Meisel and Jurgen Teller.
Favorite fashion magazine, other than Italian Vogue, of course.
I like Marie Claire, as well as every Vogue and Nylon.
Whose modeling career would you like to have?
Hmm I would like to have my own career and build up my own career status but
I would like to be a combination of Karlie Kloss and Miranda Kerr. If you can
make some kind of runway goddess who can also do Victoria's Secret that would
be really cool and then that way I can do any kind of work, it'll be awesome.
Are you on Facebook, Twitter or some other social network?
I have a Facebook Fanpage. I have not checked it recently because I have been
so busy with interviews and going back and forth to New York, but last time I
checked there were more than 10,000 fans and I thought that that was awesome,
I was not expecting to have this big of a fan base... I am so surprised and
excited to have so many fans who are supporting me.
Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
I just want my fans to know how much I appreciate them because watching the
episodes sometimes I would get a little down and think, "aw man..." but they
have really supported me and been rooting for me the whole way and it has
really meant a lot to me.
Thank you Brittani!
