The two things you must do when you visit Yangon are eating Mohinga and visiting Shwedagon Pagoda.

First, Mohinga is one of the most famous and popular dishes in Myanmar. It's a thin rice noodle soaked in a creamy minced fish broth with onions. I personally did not like it very much. The flavor was a little bland, even with some lime. A chunk of snakehead or catfish meat might have done it better. I've been spoiled by Vietnamese and Chinese noodles.

Second, you must visit Shwedagon Pagoda. It's simply the most iconic and important religious destination in the entire city. It's a stunning example of how devoted people are to Buddhism. I love this place and could easily spend hours there just people watching and praying. Yes, I grew up a Buddhist!

On the outskirts of Yangon, I sampled some Burmese food I've never tried before. First, I started off with a coconut creamy noodle dish that was filled with onions. It was a very unique flavor and taste. I enjoyed it as I ate it more and more. Next, I tried the sticky rice with coconut. I loved how the rice was burnt around the edges and the dried chopped up shrimps were the perfect combination. Unfortunately, the lentils and the coconut on the side were pretty average to me and I didn't finish that part. Next up, as a treat, I tried some sweet preserved tomatoes which can be eaten as a snack or a dessert. It didn't even taste anything like a tomato. I was a bit disappointed that there were loads of sugar on it though.
I also tried some banana rice dessert that tasted almost identical to a typical banh chui or banana cake in Vietnam. After the end cards, I try strawberry kulfi or a creamy popsicle. The flavors were refreshing and perfect for a hot day in Myanmar. The richness of the milk flavors made it closer to frozen ice cream than a frozen bar. Lastly, I sample a cup of falooda, which is popular throughout the region. It's a milk base sweet liquid surrounded by various ingredients like beants and nuts and some stuff I've never even heard of it. Think of it as a Burmese version of Vietnamese che.

Life the past few years have taken me to many places that I would have never imaged. Things just happened, largely because of viewers like you. I never thought I'd step foot on a ship like this, yet a lone get to spend a night there. This hotel near downtown Yangon is a former ship with a gutted engine. Now, it's docked and you can stay there! I really enjoyed my time there, imaging I was back in time sailing across the Atlantic or something from the movies. If you're looking for a place to stay aside from the Strand, I recommend this place, not too far away.
