I walked across Lower Manhattan and bumped into a couple of friends today. It was such a sunny day so perhaps that's why everyone was out. I tried to find out the specific neighborhoods where I had been. To my surprise, they can be divided in a fairly messy way. One hood overlaps with another while some are much bigger than the others. But my second thought was that such a division actually makes a perfectly human sense. In my opinion, neighborhoods should be defined by their "vibes" rather than by a top-down careful city planning. Ambiguity arises when you try to slap a label on everything. It makes sense that neighborhoods overlap with each other because interactions are fluid. It even seems like there's a pretty seamless transition from one hood to another though I'm no expert of urban planning. That's just how I feel. But I suppose that's why New York City is one of the most walkable cities in the world, and I absolutely love that.
